Role

The QA Engineer is an integral role to help ensure the best possible experiences for our customers and internal stakeholders. You are an inquisitive technologist that independently oversees the creation and curation of an end to end testing process. As such, you will ensure business operations run smoothly and customer experiences are pain free. This role for the company is critical to our growth as you’ll facilitate:

  • Ensuring the best possible experience for our customers as we launch new features and products and foreseeing how changes or issues in software products can affect users, systems, and the overall project
  • Building confidence in engineering lead initiatives by maximizing test coverage, coordinating testing requirements with the business, and running performance and load tests
  • Improving developer velocity by reducing the need for regression remediation
  • Growing testing as an engineering practice by coordinating standards, documentation, agile practices, and capabilities across the tech org

This role reports into our Lead Engineer, QA Automation. However, you will own parts of the QA practice across engineering teams. You will collaborate with engineers and leadership on defining milestones and identifying areas for improvement. As our engineering stack grows, you will help enforce standards for testing and documenting our process.

Objectives | The problems you’ll solve in your first 12 months:

  • Month 1: Meet key stakeholders and developers, familiarize yourself with the current development process for the Backend team. Your focus will be on understanding our systems and products thoroughly. Additionally, you will shadow our backend team to learn how to manually test features, gaining valuable hands-on experience.
  • Month 2: Dive deeper into our testing tool, Xray, becoming proficient in its usage. The responsibilities will include performing manual testing using Xray scripts and contributing new tests to the platform. Work with the team to document process and systems’ functions, and you’ll ensure all ticket grooming also covers testing needs.
  • Month 3: Create comprehensive end-to-end test scenarios spanning multiple systems, not just individual components. You should be able to analyze requirements and provide feedback on any missing test cases.
  • Month 4: Learn to identify bugs in logs, from monitors, and from slack signals, and ticket accordingly. You should also reach a level of comfort and confidence to sign off on basic features independently.
  • Month 5: Help the team to ideate on holiday-specific monitors and alarms. Identify risks for our process based on your testing in the previous months.
  • Months 6-9: Support the business through a push of holiday sales. Ensure monitors and tests are performing as expected and creating tickets to mitigate issues as they come up.
  • Month 10: Ideate and opine on the roadmap for stricter testing needs. Specifically we should look to report on the progress and efficacy of testing. You should be capable of suggesting and enhancing QA and development processes, addressing pain points, and proposing solutions to improve team efficiency.
  • Month 12: Work with our Lead Engineer, QA Automation and team leads to collaborate on solutions, work streams, and enforcing testing standards

Competencies | What we are looking for:

  • Structured Approach: Curiosity is king! There’s a lot of learning to do regarding our systems. You have the ability to ingest the complexities of our system and create a comprehensive testing plan that incrementally gets us higher confidence in delivering customer facing features and operational excellence. Since the volume of tests will only grow over time and complexity, organization will be of the utmost importance.
  • Ability to Deliver: You have a proven ability to deliver against the plan (Structured approach). The business will be relying on you and your expertise.
  • Detail Orientation: We seek someone with a keen eye for detail and thoroughness in their work, ensuring every detail is noticed. This includes the ability to spot inaccuracies, inconsistencies, or errors in documents, data, or processes. The capacity to meticulously analyze, review, and ensure accuracy is crucial to the success of our team.
  • General Testing Expertise / Standard Setting: We are incorporating additional testing tools for the backend stack. You should have some experience with tools to test apis and services. This should include unit tests, integration tests, smoke tests, and regression tests.
  • Proven ability to communicate with technical and non-technical people alike: We’re looking for someone who can identify areas for us to improve by working with stakeholders and developers. You should be able to take feedback directly and transform them into developer needs. Moreover, as you become familiar with our tools, you’ll be educating technical and non-technical folks on the hows and whys of QA (both for manual testing and automated testing).
