Since 1995, TIME for Kids has delivered current events from TIME news bureaus around the world to millions of students in elementary and middle school classrooms across the U.S. TIME for Kids presents news and feature stories in a format that teaches young readers to become critical thinkers and informed citizens. As an educational publication, the mission of TIME for Kids is to help teachers engage students with the world around them and inspire kids to join the conversation about current events.

The job: 

TIME for Kids is seeking an editor to be involved in all aspects of creating content, from pitching, reporting, and writing stories to choosing photographs, working with designers, and editing other writers’ work in a deadline-driven environment. This person will help create current events magazines that are used in elementary and middle school classrooms, and will also contribute to ongoing and new special projects. 

Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize and help develop the story lineup for TFK.
  • Pitch and write compelling news and feature stories for kids.
  • Assign and edit compelling news and feature stories for kids.
  • Adapt TIME stories so that the reading level is appropriate for younger readers.
  • Manage and mentor TFK Kid Reporters by assigning and editing their stories.
  • Contribute to ongoing and new special projects as needed.
  • Promote and abide by our commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. 

Qualifications: 

  • 5+ years of experience writing and editing as a journalist. Experience writing and editing for students is preferred, but not required.
  • A Bachelor’s or master’s degree in journalism, education, or a related field.
  • An awareness of education and the role of informational text in the classroom. 
  • Experience using Adobe InCopy, WordPress, and G Suite. Brand social-media management, particularly in Sprinklr, is a plus.

Location:

This is a hybrid role. Eligible candidates for the role must be within a commutable distance of TIME’s New York City office upon hire and may be expected to be physically present as needed (typically 3 days/week).
