Annual Salary: $90,000 - $90,000

Hours: Primarily Monday-Friday 9:00am – 6:00pm

(Requires Evenings, Weekends and Holidays)

Position Summary

The Hip Hop Museum (THHM) Director of Communications (DOC) will be responsible for managing all communications plan activities, including brand management, public relations, media relations, advertising, website, newsletter, and marketing strategies to position the Museum as a regional destination for all audiences. The DOC will ensure that THHM is viewed as the primary source and driving force of information within this diverse Hip Hop network and its essential foundation. The opportunity to connect the community with culture, history, artistic inspiration, and a space of learning. This position will guide the strategy for all communications to consistently articulate THHM’s mission, vision and values.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES (including But Not Limited To)

In this position, you will:

  • Develop and implement marketing strategies, marketing plans, advertising purchases, media relations, and media releases for all Museum programs, exhibitions, events, and campaigns
  • Lead online content that engages the audience segments and leads to measurable outcomes
  • Put communications vehicles in place to create momentum and awareness as well as to test the effectiveness of the activities
  • Collaborates with leadership to integrate communications objectives into the overall strategic plan
  • Work with Chief Development Officer to identify fundraising opportunities that align with THHM’s mission
  • Coordinates media interactions, and hosts media visits from various sources
  • Creates and executes press releases and media alerts to local, statewide, and regional media
  • Cultivate working relationships with local and national media outlets for the purpose of developing substantive press coverage of exhibitions and other Museum programs and activities
  • Works diligently to promote the Museum and implement new publicity strategies to reach prospective visitors
  • Develop and execute integrated marketing and public relations campaigns to promote exhibits and special events
  • Distributes information on Museum exhibitions, programs, collections, etc. to media outlets and other marketing venues
  • Manages inquiries and provides information, coordinates interviews for news and editorial requests
  • Oversee e-communication, website design and content, social media, graphic design to effectively communicate with various audiences
  • Coordinate webpage maintenance to ensure that new and consistent information is posted regularly
  • Create and edit content about the Museum’s exhibitions and other activities written for a general audience on the digital platform and print materials
  • Serve as Museum spokesperson and manage all media contacts
  • Manage advertising while maintaining a balanced budget
  • Attend community events to promote Museum activities as required
  • Performs other related duties as required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS And ABILITIES

  • Highly collaborative style; experience developing and implementing communication strategies
  • Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills
  • Meticulous, detail oriented, and exudes good judgment
  • Collaborative, with good leadership qualities
  • Well-versed in all social media platforms and website management
  • Demonstrated ability to track and manage key initiatives concurrently
  • Familiarity with traditional and non-traditional marketing strategies
  • Adept at multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
  • Ability to think strategically and prioritize workload
  • Can extract and disseminate complex information quickly and succinctly
  • Personable, courteous, and respectful
  • Ability to work independently and part of a team to achieve THHM goals and objectives
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays

EDUCATION And EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or a related discipline
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in communications and public relations, media and/or museum experience preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Experience working in a museum setting or similar environment
