Director of Application Modernization

Overview

As the Director of Application Modernization at ClearScale, you will be at the helm of our application-related technical endeavors, driving the success of our application practice. You are a driven, entrepreneurial-minded leader with an uncommon mix of interest in heads-down technical pursuits and technical evangelism. You want to join an organization with a storied history of success, with the competencies, case studies, and engineering horsepower to show for it, to bolster your passion for leading in the application space. You have a business acumen for shaping a brand in the application vertical in the AWS ecosystem and being the chief ambassador for that brand, raising other core leaders on your team to do the same. Your primary focus will be application development, modernization, and cloud-native, leveraging cutting-edge technologies, including Generative AI, to deliver advanced solutions for our clients.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership:

• Lead a team of highly skilled engineers and architects, providing technical guidance, mentorship, and fostering a culture of continuous learning.
• Effective mentoring aptitude for cultivating upcoming client developers and delivery consultants.
• Report on critical metrics, including utilization, profit margins, customer retention rates, adherence to AWS program requirements, and the performance of upselling efforts.

Technical Strategy:

• Develop and execute a technical strategy for the application practice, staying abreast of AWS services and emerging technologies to shape our offerings.
• Proven capacity to discern market prospects, propel business growth, and craft reusable intellectual property.
• Build market-differentiated solutions, strategies, and methodologies and address industry and technology-specific verticals in new and innovative ways.

Generative AI Integration:

• Champion the integration of Generative AI into application modernization projects, utilizing tools like AWS SageMaker and Amazon Bedrock to accelerate modernization efforts.

Architecture Design:

• Collaborate with technical architects and engineers to design robust, scalable, and secure cloud-native applications, ensuring adherence to best practices and AWS Well-Architected Framework.
• Substantial hands-on experience with enterprise infrastructure and cloud, development of solution architectures, development and innovation

Technical Expertise:

• Stay at the forefront of AWS services, serverless computing, containerization, and microservices architecture, applying this knowledge to create innovative solutions.
• Proficiency in software engineering methodologies, automation, design principles, and expertise in cloud-native architectures.

Proof of Concepts:

• Lead the development of technical proofs of concept and prototypes to demonstrate the feasibility of proposed solutions to clients.

Code Quality:

• Establish and enforce code quality standards, continuous integration, and continuous deployment (CI/CD) practices within the practice. Establish reusable patterns to drive efficiency when faced with like-for-like problem sets.

Technical Documentation:

• Ensure the creation of comprehensive technical documentation, including architecture diagrams and best practices guides.

Client Technical Engagement:

• Collaborate closely with clients to understand their technical challenges, align solutions with their objectives, and provide technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle.

Technical Community Engagement:

• Actively participate in technical communities, AWS user groups, and conferences, sharing knowledge and representing the company as a technical thought leader.
• Be the chief application modernization practice brand builder, brand ambassador, and cultural gatekeeper, visible in the market as a thought leader.
• Be the AWS facing ‘face’ of the practice, aligning to AWS service teams, business development teams, and technical stakeholders to evangelize capabilities

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field (Master's preferred).
• Extensive technical expertise in application development, modernization, and cloud-native development on AWS.
• Fascination and hands-on experience of Generative AI technologies and their practical implementation in application in code and modernization projects.
• AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional or similar certifications.
• Proven experience in leading technical teams and projects to successful outcomes.
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, .NET, Node.js, Python or others commonly used in cloud-native development.
• Expertise in AWS services, including AWS Lambda, Amazon ECS, Amazon EKS, AWS Fargate, AWS Step Functions, etc.
• Experience with DevOps tools and practices, including CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and automated testing.
