Job Summary

Under close supervision of the Director or designated clinical staff, positions assure the safety and treatment of patients and functions at the entry level of the Behavioral Health Assistant job class series. Primary duties include facilitating patient participation in program activities, encouraging healthy personal care (ie. hygiene), utilizing behavioral health techniques to de-escalate agitated patients, and documenting interactions with patients including events or situations that occur while working in an assigned area.

In addition, the positions provide patient orientation on admission; obtain vital signs and communicate findings with an RN. It is expected that this position interacts therapeutically with staff and patients at all times.

Note: These positions do not have a designated assigned unit and may be assigned to any unit designated by the supervisor. Incumbents may perform patient observer duties but primarily assists patients who may require behavioral health interventions (ie. de-escalation techniques) and do not require the assistance of clinical staff.

What You Will Do

  • Assisting staff in the care and treatment of patients.
  • Admitting and discharging patients from the assigned behavioral health unit.
  • Performing and documenting per protocol 15-minute ambulatory observation checks.
  • Documenting and monitoring patient personal property.
  • Observing and documenting all pertinent and/or abnormal interactions and behaviors.
  • Assisting with food service delivery.
  • Taking and recording Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) readings.
  • Obtaining urine specimens for testing.
  • Completing data entry tasks clerical duties as assigned and responding appropriately to telephone calls.
  • Patient observation.

Minimum Qualifications For The Job

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Must obtain 10 hours of education related to Mental Health and /or addictions within four (4) months of hire and annually.
  • Experience: One (1) year of experience working directly with the public providing a service or one (1) year of experience working with patients or clients who have been diagnosed with addiction or mental illness. Preference will be given to applicants with experience working with persons who experience mental health, addiction or behavioral health challenges.
    • Substitution: A minimum of twelve (12) college credits in Psychology, Sociology, Mental Health or Chemical Dependency can be substituted for the required year of experience.
  • Certification(s): Within ninety (90) days of hire: Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider CPR or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification and completion of TEAM & Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT) training.

Internal Hires: Pay rate will be determined based on applicable personnel rule or union contract terms.
