Brownell Library seeks a flexible, friendly individual to perform a variety of clerical and cataloging duties, support the Assistant Library Director, and coordinate Adult library program marketing and programming. Full-time position (40 hours weekly) with good benefits, starting at $17.98/hr, based on experience. The schedule includes one evening and occasional weekend hours. A bachelor’s degree with library experience and computer and people skills is essential. Must be able to work independently while also being an essential team member.

Pay/Wages

The starting wage is between $17.98 and $21.80 per hour.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Clerical and Cataloging Duties

  • Utilize Integrated Library Software (lLS), Office Suite software, and internet resources for information retrieval and communication
  • Process new Youth materials after they have been approved by the Youth Librarian, including copy cataloging and final processing.
  • Process discards as they are routed from the Youth and Adult collections
  • Assist with the preparation of material to send to the bindery, if needed
  • Process and catalog select adult materials, including donation and replacement materials
  • Sort and shelve books, newspapers, and periodicals

Marketing and Programming

  • Propose, plan, and implement topical Adult programming within the library
  • Coordinate Adult programming with input from other staff
  • Leads organization of monthly adult book displays
  • Lead marketing of Adult library programs and services on the library website, social media, monthly newsletters, and flyers
  • Targeted outreach and promotion of Adult library programs and services to applicable community groups
  • Collaborate with library staff, community members, and organizations to create intergenerational programming opportunities

Supervising and Training Volunteers

  • Train, schedule, and assign appropriate tasks to all volunteers in Technical Services (4+ volunteers)
  • Teach library policies and procedures to volunteers and ensure that each understands their responsibilities
  • Plan and provide volunteer appreciation acknowledgments, send thank you, birthday, and/or get-well cards, etc
  • Provide instruction in book mending and preparing new books for processing

Support the Head Cataloger

  • Continue operation of the Technical Services Dept. in the absence of the Head Cataloger
  • Conduct periodic database record maintenance
  • Develop a work plan for the coming year with Head Cataloger
  • Identify, recommend, and coordinate re-ordering of supplies
  • Assist with processing adult materials
  • Assist in writing, updating, and maintaining Technical Services procedures manual

Adult and Youth Circulation and Reference Desk

  • Work regular shifts on the Youth and Adult desks of at least 4 hours a week per desk
  • Work directly with patrons checking library materials in and out on the computer, renewing items, placing holds, and calling patrons when materials are available.
  • Register patrons for new cards
  • Assist in planning and maintaining special displays and passive programs
  • Assist patrons with information inquiries, basic computer help, and compliance with library policies
  • May act as person-in-charge as assigned; assumes responsibility for safe and effective operation of the library facility

Manage Periodical Holdings

  • Manage adult and youth magazine collections, adding new magazines and withdrawing older issues on an agreed schedule and related processing
  • Report missing issues to the Head Cataloger. Retrieve back issues of magazines for patrons when required
  • Maintain the periodical area to keep it organized and neat

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with cataloging best practices and MARC record cataloging
  • Ability to develop strong interactive community relationships and programs that reflect community interests and goals
