Roberto Cavalli, the Italian designer synonymous with vibrant animal prints and sand-blasted denim, has died in Florence. He was 83 years old. Born in Florence, Cavalli studied textile print before going on to launch his fashion brand in 1970. He presented his first collection for Prêt-à-Porter in Paris at age 30. It was there that his work, which included a revolutionary printing procedure on leather that he invented and patented, quickly garnered the notice of fashion industry mainstays including Pierre Cardin. He went on to open his first boutique in Saint-Tropez in 1972, and was soon after invited to present at the historic Sala Bianca in Florence. Throughout his career, the Roberto Cavalli brand became synonymous with bold, brightly-coloured dresses oozing in sex appeal, heavy use of animal prints and innovative approach to fabrics. He went on to introduce additional lines, including RC Menswear, Just Cavalli, which was marketed to a younger consumer, and a children’s collection. The brand also expanded into hospitality, opening its Cavalli Café in Florence in 2002, a concept it eventually brought to other cities, including Milan and Miami. The former Gucci designer is a fashion storyteller whose maximalist aesthetic helped triple sales at the Kering-owned megabrand. Valentino has named former Gucci designer Alessandro Michele its creative director, the Roman couture house said Thursday. The designer’s first show for the brand will take place during Paris Fashion Week in September. The announcement answers one of the biggest questions on the lips of fashion insiders for more than a year: where would Michele, one of the industry’s biggest names, end up after leaving his post at Gucci? In the end, Michele won’t be headed to fashion’s biggest group LVMH, as many had speculated, but rather to Mayhoola for Investments, the fashion group backed by the Qatari royal family that also owns Balmain and Pal Zileri. Last week, designer Pierpaolo Piccioli exited Valentino after 25 years at the house, including 8 years its as sole creative director. The brand will not show menswear or haute couture in June. Iris Apfel, the interior designer and fashion tastemaker who found fame as an octogenarian, has died aged 102. Stu Loeser, a spokesman for her estate, confirmed her death to multiple US outlets but did not give a cause of death. It is understood she died at her home in Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday. As an eminent authority on antique fabrics, Apfel consulted on restoration projects including work at the White House. The subject of several museum exhibitions and a documentary, Apfel more recently starred in campaigns for H&M, eBay, Citroën and even had a Barbie doll made in her likeness. The bespectacled New Yorker had carved out a vivacious, idiosyncratic personal style with a heavy dose of wit. Describing herself as “the world’s oldest living teenager” in her Instagram bio where she amassed more than 2 million followers, she wrote “more is more and less is a bore.” Read more below.
