About us

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, is the premier forum for facilitating economic growth, cooperation, trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region. APEC is an intergovernmental grouping that operates on the basis of non-binding commitments, open dialogue and equal respect for the views of all participants. Unlike the WTO or other multilateral trade bodies, APEC has no treaty obligations required of its participants. Decisions made within APEC are reached by consensus and commitments are undertaken on a voluntary basis. APEC's 21 Member Economies are Australia; Brunei Darussalam; Canada; Chile; People's Republic of China; Hong Kong, China; Indonesia; Japan; Republic of Korea; Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; Papua New Guinea; Peru; The Republic of the Philippines; The Russian Federation; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; United States of America; Viet Nam. The APEC Secretariat is based in Singapore and operates as the core support mechanism for the APEC process. It provides coordination, technical and advisory support as well as information management, communications and public outreach services. The APEC Secretariat performs a central project management role, assisting APEC Member Economies and APEC fora with overseeing more than 250 APEC-funded projects. APEC's annual budget is also administered by the APEC Secretariat.

The public strongly supports international cooperation to tackle global crises, says 7,000 respondents to the perception survey we conducted across the Asia-Pacific just before APEC - Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders met in San Francisco last year.   At the the Senior Officials’ Steering Committee on Economic and Technical Cooperation on Tuesday in Arequipa, I explained the opportunities and gaps that were identified in this survey with officials to advise how multilateral organizations like APEC can shape projects that reinforce messages related to trade and investment; digitalization and innovation; and sustainability and inclusivity. In addition to informing the policymaking process, messages the public expects to hear include: ✅ Articulating multilateralism’s benefits to society beyond trade. ✅ Narrowing the digital divide and addressing concerns around cybersecurity and misinformation. ✅ Prioritizing basic concerns such as jobs, food security, and healthcare.   This information will help inform the way our messages resonate with the public and I’m grateful for the constructive comments shared by senior officials on the survey results and how member economies could implement the recommendations which will open opportunities to meet the needs of the public.   My appreciation to Rechelle Tangcangco for her work on the survey and for the valuable contributions from David M., Cassandra Ang and Carlos Kuriyama.   For more information, the full report can be found here:  https://lnkd.in/ehTkPb-R
