You're passionate about environmental services. How can you turn that passion into a successful career? Environmental services, or ES, is a broad field that encompasses various aspects of protecting and enhancing the natural environment, such as waste management, pollution control, resource conservation, environmental education, and sustainability. If you love nature and want to make a positive impact on the planet, ES might be the perfect career choice for you. But how do you get started and advance in this competitive and diverse sector? Here are some tips to help you turn your passion into a successful career.
The first step is to explore the different types of ES jobs and industries that interest you. Do you want to work in the public sector, the private sector, or the non-profit sector? Do you prefer to work in the field, in the office, or in a hybrid setting? Do you have a specific area of expertise or interest, such as water quality, renewable energy, environmental justice, or wildlife conservation? Networking with professionals in the industry and seeking mentorship can provide invaluable guidance and opportunities. Explore forestry- forestry is so much more than stereotypical expectations and really provides a wide range of career opportunities from indoor office work to 100% woods time, and everything in between! I know I had many misconceptions about the forestry career path before I started networking more within it. Now I see how everything in American society somehow relies on forestry in some capacity… it doesn’t look the same everywhere but most everything to help the environment or work outdoors revolves around managing the trees.
The next step is to build your skills and knowledge in ES. You can do this by enrolling in a relevant degree program, taking online courses, attending workshops and seminars, reading books and journals, joining professional associations and networks, and volunteering or interning for ES organizations. You can also learn from mentors and peers who have experience and insights in the ES field. Building your skills will not only help you prepare for your desired ES job, but also demonstrate your commitment and passion to potential employers.
The third step is to showcase your achievements and value in ES. You can do this by creating a professional portfolio, resume, and cover letter that highlight your education, skills, projects, and accomplishments in ES. You can also use social media, blogs, podcasts, or videos to share your opinions, insights, and stories about ES topics and issues. Showcasing your achievements will help you stand out from the crowd and attract the attention of recruiters and hiring managers who are looking for talented and passionate ES professionals.

Do a good job, and focus on building lasting relationships with clients and other professionals. The best work I've gotten has come from either repeat business or referrals from clients or other professionals. You get this work by doing your work well and building good working relationships.
The fourth step is to network and connect with other ES professionals and organizations. You can do this by attending events, conferences, webinars, and meetups related to ES. You can also join online communities, forums, and groups where you can exchange ideas, information, and opportunities with other ES enthusiasts. Networking and connecting will help you expand your contacts, learn from others, and discover new possibilities and trends in ES.

Explore forestry and forest management workshops, association conferences and organizational meetings! Networking is crucial no matter the field or industry pursued but especially crucial when talking about working within such a dynamic field (the environmental services) that has multiple touch points in different areas of expertise.
The fifth step is to adapt and grow in your ES career. You can do this by staying updated on the latest developments, innovations, and challenges in ES. You can also seek feedback, coaching, and mentoring from your colleagues, managers, and mentors. You can also pursue further education, training, and certification to enhance your skills and qualifications. Adapting and growing will help you stay relevant, competitive, and satisfied in your ES career.
The final step is to enjoy and contribute in your ES career. You can do this by celebrating your achievements, recognizing your impact, and expressing your gratitude to those who support you. You can also contribute to the ES community and society by sharing your knowledge, skills, and passion with others, especially the younger generation. You can also participate in advocacy, activism, and philanthropy to support the causes and values that matter to you. Enjoying and contributing will help you find meaning, purpose, and fulfillment in your ES career.
