You're looking to streamline your warehouse operations. Which management systems should you consider?
Warehouse operations are crucial for any business that deals with inventory, distribution, or fulfillment. They affect the efficiency, accuracy, and profitability of your supply chain. But how can you streamline your warehouse operations and optimize your performance? One of the key factors is choosing the right warehouse management systems (WMS) for your needs. In this article, we'll explore some of the common types of WMS and their benefits and drawbacks.
A WMS is a software application that helps you manage the movement and storage of goods within your warehouse. It tracks the location, quantity, and status of your inventory, as well as the tasks and workflows of your staff. A WMS can also integrate with other systems, such as your enterprise resource planning (ERP), order management system (OMS), or transportation management system (TMS), to provide a holistic view of your supply chain.

Healthcare has used the ERP as its primary WMS. This is only sometimes the most efficient process because of the technology used by outside stakeholders. A WMS offers receipt scanning, barcode creation, and space availability within the warehouse/distribution center. What works best is something that delivers multi-functional functions. Example: If you receive an item that is directly delivered to the end user, you want your WMS to be able to create a delivery label vs. being placed on the shelf and then picked and delivered. Efficiency is #1 and functionality #2

Consider the functions your warehouse is attempting to increase its efficiency. This will help determine how robust and functional the WMS will need to be. It is easy to chose a system that either far more than expensive than needed. It is also simple to not evaluate correctly and consider only cost and find your needs are more complicated than simple pick and pack.
A WMS can be a great asset for streamlining your warehouse operations, improving visibility, accuracy, productivity, and customer satisfaction. By reducing errors and waste, you can ensure that the right products are picked, packed, and shipped to the right customers at the right time. Additionally, a WMS can optimize your space and resources by using data-driven algorithms to assign the best locations, routes, and methods for your inventory and staff. Moreover, it can increase your efficiency and flexibility by automating and standardizing processes such as receiving, putaway, replenishment, picking, packing, shipping, and returns. Finally, it can enhance customer service and loyalty by providing faster delivery, real-time tracking, and accurate inventory information.

Different types of WMS are available in the market, each with its own features, functions, and costs. On-premise WMS requires you to install and maintain the software and hardware on your own servers and devices, offering more control and customization, but also more upfront and ongoing expenses and risks. Cloud-based WMS runs on a third-party provider's servers and can be accessed through the internet, providing more scalability and accessibility, but also more dependency and security concerns. Hybrid WMS combines on-premise and cloud-based WMS, allowing you to leverage the best of both worlds. It offers more flexibility and reliability, but also more complexity and integration challenges.

Choosing a WMS is not a one-size-fits-all decision, so it's important to consider your business goals, budget, warehouse size, inventory complexity, staff skills, and customer expectations. Before making the decision, ask yourself what the main pain points and opportunities for improvement are in your warehouse operations. Additionally, consider the key features and functions that you need from a WMS, how much you are willing and able to invest in it initially and over time, its compatibility and adaptability with existing and future systems and processes, how user-friendly it is for staff and customers to use and learn, as well as its reliability and security.

When preparing for demos from your WMS candidates, focus more on alternative scenarios - such as, “what if my customer cancels the order?”, “how do I unpick or unpack that transaction?” And “how is all of this behavior being tracked?” It’s easy to demo the basics, but you identify the power of the WMS by examining how it handles exceptions, not the rules.

My best advice is do NOT choose the one that says “all from 1 invoice”. If they do it all then they are either locking you in and can charge whatever they want or they don’t do anything effectively and will move slow on customizing to your needs. Going further look for a wms that has an open architecture. One that is willing to integrate with other tech providers rather than compete with them. To quote Steve Jobs “Do not try to do everything. Do 1 thing well!”

Sometimes the cost/benefit ratio impacts in a bad way when you’re using a WMS from external sources. It’s better to create an IT department within your company to design, built and implement your own WMS that fits perfect the needs and requirements you have. In the long term between the cost fixing problem from an external WMS and the money you’re loosing because of the delays caused by those problems are the same if you build from scratch your own.

Implementing a WMS is a major change for your warehouse operations, requiring careful planning, execution, and evaluation for a successful transition. It's important to define your objectives and expectations clearly and communicate them to all stakeholders. Additionally, selecting a WMS provider with relevant experience, expertise, and support for your industry is essential. Involving staff in the selection, testing, and training of the WMS is also important, as it allows them to provide feedback and address any concerns. Thoroughly testing the WMS before going live is critical, as is having a backup plan in case of any issues or disruptions. Finally, you should monitor and measure the performance and impact of the WMS, making any necessary adjustments or improvements along the way.

1. Warehouse Management Systems and 2. Inventory Management system. Both are like the 2 eyes. The tandemness of these will result in high effectiveness of achieving KPIs in a Warehouse. Another obvious benefit from these is the elegance or the level up of the Organization which may improve the trust and satisfaction of the customers. On a 80 / 20 Pareto also, only about 20 % of Warehouses capture the trust and satisfaction of 80 % of 'consumers' as a whole. A growth of Organization has to be on a foundation of customer trust and satisfaction. Hence both WMS , and IMS are needed together.

I agree with the article. There are various things to consider when deciding on any particular WMS: the capacity and requirements of the facility as well as the potential for growth, to name a few. Most often I've seen the lack of preparation and testing prior to a go-live be the Achilles heel when adopting WMS systems. It's definitely worth over preparing and testing to know how to adress all possible dilemmas than spending the money and time on a system that may not be best suitable for a company or facility.
