3ds Max is my preferred tool for presenting design proposals. That allows me to explore realistic visualizations with my customers to understand what the result will look like. My initial sketching starts in Revit; I use basic geometry to link the 3D model to 3ds Max. Then, in 3ds Max + Corona Renderer, I leverage my 3D asset library to present real-world products from kitchen cabinetry, living room furniture, bathroom accessories, and more. The visualizations look very good, given that the 3D models are realistic. That's how my customers get to know what the house would look like in the physical world. Storytelling. Something that I have found to be beneficial and that ties together the excellent responses from the contributors on the above subjects is how we (as architects and professionals) present the design in the most visually tangible way possible but still tell a story to captivate the client. One example that helped my team win a large project was to take renderings and project information and present it in a real-time application like Google Earth. This tool allowed us to provide current and future design considerations for the intended site in order to convey a stronger story to the client for success.

Before sketching I would add moodboarding, creating a colection of inspiration images of shapes and materials can help you when you get to the sketching phase. Between sketching and modeling nowadays AI generated images can help you define in which direction to take the design by fast image generation. After that of course modeling and rendering are required in order to produce a clear image of all the elements. And as other peers mentioned storytelling is an important aspect to take in consideration in all the steps.
