What do you do if your interview nerves are getting the best of you?
Interviews can be a nerve-wracking experience, especially when you're eager to make a good impression. It's natural to feel anxious, but excessive nerves can hinder your performance. Fortunately, stress management techniques can help you remain calm and focused. By understanding how to harness your anxiety, you can transform it into a positive force that propels you through the interview process. The key is to prepare not just for the questions you'll face, but also for the emotional and physiological responses that arise during high-pressure situations.
Thorough preparation is your first line of defense against interview nerves. Research the company, understand the role you're applying for, and rehearse your answers to common interview questions. Familiarize yourself with your own resume and be ready to discuss your experiences and skills. This preparation boosts your confidence and reduces the fear of the unknown, which is a significant contributor to anxiety. Additionally, practicing out loud, either in front of a mirror or with a friend, can help you refine your delivery and make you more comfortable with articulating your thoughts.

Visualization is a powerful tool in stress management. Before the interview, take some time to visualize yourself succeeding. Imagine walking into the room with confidence, shaking hands with the interviewer, and answering questions with poise. This mental rehearsal can enhance your self-assurance and set a positive tone for the actual event. By picturing a successful outcome, you're programming your mind to follow that path, which can help alleviate nerves when you're in the hot seat.

Visualization is absolutely critical and can be a game-changing tool in ensuring our success! I know in the months before my bar exam, I visualized myself taking and passing the bar with flying colors. And it worked! So I highly recommend this for interviews as well. In fact, I get into a related concept I adapted from marketing, the "Triangle of Composure." More on that, plus tons of interview tips, are in my interview on NPR's Life Kit YouTube Series: How to ace a job interview, DM me if you'd like the direct link!

You were born to SHINE! Optimize health and weight, stress less, energize, eat 'nutiliciously', age fabulously
Experiencing stress about a future outcome is real! Too often we imagine the worst case scenario. Visualization is a tool to quell that stress. By imagining the best case scenario, and then, allowing yourself to virtually put yourself in that scenario, your brain reacts as though it’s happening NOW. So that means that your stress hormones calm down, and your feelings of positivity and joy help release positive hormones -one being serotonin. Before any high stress situation, try this technique. And believe your positive scenario while you’re in the situation.
Never underestimate the power of deep breathing to calm your nerves. When you feel anxiety creeping up, focus on taking slow, deep breaths. Inhale through your nose for a count of four, hold for a count of four, and exhale through your mouth for a count of four. This technique, known as box breathing, can help reduce stress by lowering your heart rate and triggering a relaxation response in your body. Practicing this before and even during your interview can keep you grounded and composed.

Helping you to stress less and perform better with breathwork
Breathing deeply is indeed a very effective method to lower down the stress and nervousness. Even more effective is breathing slowly which is what is happening with the box breathing. By holding your breath you will bring down the average breathing rate per minute to around 6.

I believe taking deep breathing will help you to be in yourself and be in your own control and just keep you aware of your own words and actions.
Your body language speaks volumes before you even utter a word. Adopting a posture that conveys confidence can actually make you feel more confident. Stand tall, make eye contact, and offer a firm handshake. During the interview, be mindful of maintaining an open and engaged posture. Avoid crossing your arms or fidgeting, as these actions can indicate nervousness. By consciously controlling your body language, you can help manage your nerves and project a more confident image.

It's important to manage your expectations realistically. Acknowledge that it's okay to be nervous and that you don't have to be perfect. Everyone makes mistakes, and interviewers understand that you're human. Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on presenting yourself authentically and showing enthusiasm for the opportunity. Remember, an interview is as much about finding a good fit for you as it is for the employer. Keeping this perspective can alleviate some of the pressure you might be feeling.

Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment without judgment. During an interview, practicing mindfulness means focusing on the current question and not dwelling on past responses or worrying about what's next. If you find your mind wandering or negative thoughts surfacing, gently bring your attention back to the present. This technique can help prevent a spiral of anxiety and keep you engaged in the conversation.

Aquí y ahora no tengo ningún problema.

If you've prepared beforehand, it's likely that no amount of thinking or ruminating directly preceding the interview is going to help (it actually may make you perform worse). Instead, allow yourself to fully feel the sensations in your body. Focus on the feeling of your heartbeat, or the feeling of the airflow through the nostrils. When anxiety arises, notice where what it feels like in the body, instead of what thoughts it triggers in the mind. Interoception, that is one's capacity for awareness of physical sensations, is correlated with intuition and nervous system regulation. Consider making a interoceptive awareness practice (e.g. body scanning, mindful breathing, yoga nidra, meditation) a daily habit to develop your equanimity.

My go-to techniques before every interview or important meetings with very senior stakeholders: 1. Do few stretches, get some quick relaxation 2. Sit in silence for 15 mins that morning 3. Do deep breathing exercise followed by step 1 Repeat step 3 just before the interview/calls so we have enough oxygen, calm mind and clear thoughts. All these with right preparation for the interview will give us the best in interview rather than worrying anxiety of interview.

Remember that an interview is just a structured conversation with a purpose. The balance of power between candidate and recruiter is equal because you can just as easily decide that you wouldn't want to work in a particular organisation, as the employer can decide that you are not the right fit. Another element to remember is that there may just be someone who has more knowledge or experience than you have. That doesn't mean that you are unemployable. It just means that you need to keep knocking on some other doors, one of which will open eventually for you. If you find that doors still aren't opening, then it may well be time to work with an experienced and qualified career coach to help build your skills and confidence.

All of the above.... As well as process the nervousness, but, there is a thing to realize..... What is the nervousness associated with? Nervousness is a triggered reaction.... Because WHY it triggers is... It is associated with something in this case an... interview. A situation. Instead of separating our emotions we process them WITH the situation and association. I would process that, "Interview Association Charge"... Itself... Also any "worry, doubt, and uncertainty"...
