It's very important to pursue a degree or master's in network security. And while doing that, one should engage in intern that will strengthen one's knowledge from school and field. This will make learning and the journey to mastery in this field, a very easy and very strong. One will however keep himself updated with latest threats as they emerge and their counter measures through article, webinars and other engineering forum. Getting certifications in these field will not only increase one's chance of being immediately hired but one would have gained a wide range of case studies and experience that one might not have encountered during ones internship.

Be at least in par with the latest threat development, when practicing you skills if possible use intelligence in order to detect where the possible attacks are coming and/or what are the tried methods. Be more clever than you opponents.

It’s very useful to show how a network works within all the involved nodes. I think is pretty much user friendly and graphic, so that also not experienced people can understand the environment and how to considerate issues and troubleshooting.
