How can you stay motivated during complex construction projects?
Complex construction projects can be challenging, rewarding, and stressful. They require a lot of planning, coordination, and problem-solving, as well as dealing with uncertainties, risks, and changes. How can you stay motivated and focused during such demanding situations? Here are some tips to help you boost your resilience and adaptability as a construction manager.
One of the keys to staying motivated is to have clear and achievable goals for yourself and your team. Goals help you track your progress, measure your performance, and celebrate your achievements. However, if your goals are too vague, unrealistic, or inconsistent, they can also cause frustration, confusion, and demotivation. Therefore, make sure your goals are SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. Also, review and adjust your goals regularly to reflect the changing conditions and expectations of your project.
-
Set clear goals and expectations: Define specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals for yourself and your team. This will help you stay focused on the project's objectives and track your progress towards completion.
-
You can set all the goals and milestones in the wotld but it always boils down to really knowing the reliability of your supplier's supply chain recent history and your contractor's ability to execute based on their commitments to deliver.
-
I make it a point to celebrate every milestone and achievement, no matter how small, because recognizing progress fuels my motivation. When tasks allow, I delegate responsibilities to my team members, trusting them to handle the workload. This not only eases my burden but also empowers them, fostering a strong sense of ownership within the team. I prioritize my own self-care, ensuring I get proper sleep, nutrition, and exercise because I know that my physical and mental well-being directly influences my energy levels and overall motivation. Taking care of myself allows me to bring my best to the complex challenges of construction projects.

Of course we need realistic goals. However, the realistic goal size for each project will be different. On construction projects in oil and gas and mining environments where safety regulations are very strict, setting targets like in other places will create stress. Safety regulations and other rules force construction processes to run more slowly than in other places. Problematic projects that are not well prepared by the owner also make normal targets elsewhere become unrealistic to achieve. Because of that, in my opinion, what motivates me is how to successfully pursue the goals that have been planned even though there are many problems, a lot of pressure and interference and too many rules that slow me down.
-
During the project we have to be motivated, and here I am talking about the oil & gas sector and the oil industry and construction. The method of motivation must be managed by us, the managers and share the positive energy around our staff and manpower. Well, in a very complex project, you have to have patience In order to focus on the adaptation and technical management of anomalies.
Another essential factor for motivation is communication. Effective communication can help you build trust, collaboration, and feedback among your stakeholders, including your clients, contractors, suppliers, and employees. Communication can also help you prevent or resolve conflicts, clarify roles and responsibilities, and share ideas and information. To communicate effectively, you need to use various methods and tools, such as meetings, reports, emails, phone calls, and apps. You also need to listen actively, ask questions, and provide constructive feedback.

Construction projects essentially manage the people behind the positions, tasks or responsibilities. It is not surprising that most of the problems on the project were caused by poor human communication and could otherwise have been solved well by good and effective communication. But humans are unique, unpredictable, full of paradoxes, and full of interests. At least in the construction projects I have worked on, good communication cannot necessarily solve problems. But effective communication can do it. Because in projects, especially when facing tricky and cheating employers, they deliberately carry out poor communication to exploit weak parties. It's very effective. This is a challenge for those of us who are in that exploited position.
No matter how experienced or skilled you are, you can always benefit from the support and learning of others. Seeking support and learning can help you cope with stress, improve your skills, and find new solutions. You can seek support and learning from various sources, such as your mentors, peers, coaches, or online communities. You can also seek support and learning from your own team, by encouraging them to share their challenges, insights, and best practices. Additionally, you can seek support and learning from external sources, such as courses, webinars, books, or podcasts.

Construction projects in Indonesia are very unique. From end to end of Indonesia's vast territory, projects are always different from one another. There are always new things to handle and learn. Is it related to technical construction issues in difficult locations, how to deal with the community around the project, how to deal with manpower who come from various ethnicities, and so on. This not only requires us to explore the technical and non-technical abilities that we have, but also to explore the sources of referrals and support that we can access. Does it come from experts at head office, consultants, colleagues in networking, from the internet, or from books. We have to be smarter in utilizing these available reference sources.
Change and uncertainty are inevitable in complex construction projects. You may face unexpected delays, disruptions, errors, or changes in scope, budget, or design. Instead of resisting or fearing change and uncertainty, you can embrace them as opportunities to learn, grow, and innovate. You can embrace change and uncertainty by adopting a flexible and positive mindset, by anticipating and preparing for different scenarios, and by involving your team and stakeholders in the change process. You can also embrace change and uncertainty by celebrating your successes and learning from your failures.
Finally, one of the most important ways to stay motivated is to take care of yourself. Taking care of yourself means paying attention to your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. You can take care of yourself by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, such as eating well, sleeping enough, exercising regularly, and avoiding substance abuse. You can also take care of yourself by managing your stress levels, such as practicing relaxation techniques, setting boundaries, and seeking help when needed. Moreover, you can take care of yourself by finding a balance between your work and personal life, such as spending time with your family and friends, pursuing your hobbies, and having fun.

Paso corto y mirada larga.

motivation comes naturally with success oversimplification? perhaps... success begins during pre-construction, when the project deliverables are accurately defined ensuring clearly defined deliverables helps set the project up for success communicating these deliverables to each stakeholder, and ensuring accuracy of proposals further sets the project up for success obtaining buy-in from every stakeholder regarding production schedules and expectations continues the trend towards success since there is no such thing as a static construction project, it's imperative that the team is constantly working to identify potential constraints and solutions in order to maintain the required production flow minimize and/or eliminate rework!
