For me, it starts with empathy. Try to keep in mind that "I don't have to be wrong in order for you to be right" and vise versa. By putting ourselves in the perspective of others we are able to better understand the impact on them. Too often people seek first to "not be wrong or at fault" as opposed to seeking resolution. This can create an adversarial dynamic that precludes any win/win resolution. Be honest, open & sincere. Acknowledge what we and they have learned and what "we" (both parties) might have done differently. Focus on the future, commit to a shared path forward and, most importantly, honor that commitment. Like broken bones, relationship that have been stressed are STRONGER when healed properly!

First, I'd like to reframe failure as an opportunity for growth, both personally and professionally. Second, it's important to acknowledge that every decision and action you make is leading you to a better version of yourself and others. Third, there is no such thing as perfection, I've dared to learn that firsthand, and I often say to my peers, students, and comrades that it is better to make life-altering decisions than no decision at all. Self-assessing and taking full responsibility for your actions when outcomes don't result as you and others plan, is only growth and being self-accountable for yesterday's version of you.

Just say you messed up. We all do it sometimes and it’s (gasp!) ok. Owning up to the mistake shows you actually care that you made one. A genuine sorry also goes a long way towards making it better. Showing humility in moments of stress or powerlessness shows others our true selves which we don’t often get to do at work and being our honest selves makes for the best and longest lasting relationships.

This phrase has resonated with me for years, mainly due to the fact that being accountable to not only your client, but yourself as well is imperative to success and personal growth. Making a mistake or getting something wrong, is going to happen, no matter meticulous you plan. The value in getting something wrong, is how you respond to it and "owning it" is the first and most important step. It is a way to build further trust with your client and is a great trait to have as a leader, peer or friend. I often say to my three sons, "I have years of experience........experience is what we call making mistakes and learning from them".

It's been my experience that it's not the failure but what is done afterwards that is more impactful to the relationship. This assumes that it was an honest mistake and not malicious. First, get the facts. Understand what went wrong, how it developed, what was your or your teams' part in it without placing blame. Owning it means that you're demonstrating your accountability through integrity and objectivity. If on a project, you owe it to your stakeholders to be as transparent as possible, describing what happened and what you are going to do about it but also what will prevent it from ever happening again. Follow these steps and you'll be on the path to restoring trust again. Remember, failure only means not having learned from the event.

After the storm has settled it's important to contemplate what went wrong, and what could have been done differently. It's important to know what was in your circle of control and/ or influence and what was not. One way of doing so is to have a third person view, to step out of the situation and see it say from above 100 feet above. And objectively give yourself feedback as a third person. The self awareness component of EI will play a huge role. Once you reflect it's also important to ensure that if you get into a similar situation in the future then what can you do differently.

Reflecting out loud about my failures, to my community and my people is one of the most fulfilling things I've begun to do. Sharing out loud areas where you can improve either personally or professionally with those that have your best interests is an absolutely worthwhile experience. Failure is one of the strongest ways to grow, you have been there, you have experienced it you are at the end learning by first hand about what went wrong, what comes next is start working in solutions and from there solve and improve. Something I noticed that was missing in this thread was that relationship building and growing from failure gracefully requires a previously established base of trust and candor. Humility and vulnerability should be the tone with which the relationship is started, so whether you reach success or failure (common symptoms of sustained effort) your partners and clients will know your sincerity is not the weak link. That baseline of trust creates the most likely scenario for sustainable progress, all things equal.
