Warehouse operations offer a unique challenge for ERP implementations. You cannot take your PC or laptop with you as material is received, quarantined, released, moved to a specific area or "bin". You need to have a handheld device with barcode reading facility or a tablet that can easily be taken to receiving docks and also to the innermost refrigerated storage areas. The entire functional process is handled in part at your desk on your PC (example: Purchase Order) and then using the handheld device at the receiving dock for receiving and drawing QC samples. Back to using your PC to test the samples and then, once again, to using the handheld device to "put-away" the released products to the bin at the desired condition.

Rarely does an ERP candidate walk into an onboarding process knowing the entire scope of the role. User companies often have very niche uses/goals for their system. Therefore, it's best to highlight real world experience of bringing niche solutions. I am not saying that you NEED the specific niche experience for an offer. Customization and configuration are sometimes used interchangeably. As an ERP is an enterprise application software package, there are two ways to make the standard ERP software more specific to the firm's requirements. Configuration is about setting parameters like selecting to charge interest on overdue debt and the relevant interest rate or the activation of the multi-currency option. Customization is related to modified reports, user interfaces and application programs. While the first two are frequently done customization types without significant risks, the third one needs to be done without making future ERP upgrades too complex or practically impossible.

I see that "bottleneck" and "capacity" are confused a lot due to their system roles. Capacity is the system’s maximum output, akin to a car’s top speed. A bottleneck, however, is a system’s traffic jam, slowing progress and preventing it from achieving its capacity. While capacity represents the system’s potential, a bottleneck restricts it. Clearing bottlenecks can help the system reach full capacity. Yet, the system’s capacity is always constrained by its largest bottleneck, much like a car’s speed is limited by the worst traffic jam on its path.

Some ERP vendors provide highly flexible ERP modules for financial integration of all types of posting transaction. A firm can decide to have separate General Ledger accounts for credit and internal sale or cost of sale as well as stock by product line or sales division. For example, ten GL accounts are needed for two product lines. With journal rule definitions, an internal invoice with products of both lines will credit the internal sale account of each product line with the corresponding sale value and the other balancing credit and debit entries in the VAT and internal debtors control accounts. The stock issues debit the cost of internal sale account and credit the stock account of each product line with the relevant cost of goods sold.

A candidate being interviewed needs to be able to demonstrate the understanding of the ERP Implementation Methodology used for a successful project completion at the client end. 1) Initiation: Mostly internal activities like team identification, sales handoff, first cut plan, etc. 2) Discovery: Identify requirements and document "As-is" processes. Initiate data migration activities. 3) Design: Solution mapping with ERP and gap analysis. Identify report modification and customization needs. Document "To-be" processes as Solution doc 4) Development and Deployment: Customizations developed. Piloting performed to demonstrate solution. 5) Training & UATs 6) Cutover: Opening Balances for inventory and ledgers. 7) Go-live and post Go-live support.
