Here's how you can foster collaboration in business strategy.

Our recent discussion about the future of R&D investment following Bell Labs, DuPont, General Electric and what Nobel Prize Laureate Louis Brus said about his discovery being supported by Bell Labs, true collaboration is required.

Start of a business strategy session is by identifying the problem. Now different parts of the organization may have different problems of goals, key to collaborate on business strategy is to bring all goals to one common goal. Once everyone is on same page, the need is to get them together to work on a cohesive solution/strategy. A chariot being pulled in different directions by the horses, will stand still rather than making progress in any direction.

Clear shared goals are fundamental to a collaborative business strategy for several reasons: 1. It reassures that you and your team are completely aligned, regarding objectives, priorities, and expectations. 2. It fosters a sense of ownership and shared responsibility among team members. Members who participate in the goal-setting procedure are more likely to be invested and committed to achieving them. 3. Having a shared sense of purpose increases engagement, motivation, and collaboration leading to better performance and productivity.

"My enemy's enemy is my friend." In a social setting, we naturally come together when we have a common enemy, regardless of our differences in language, culture, or geography. Similarly, when a team shares the exact same goal, collaboration flows naturally, even for an entirely new team. Certainly, disagreements or multiple suggestions may arise, but ultimately, as long as the team members have the best interest of the end goal in mind (putting aside selfish agendas and ego/ pride), the best decision will be made. In my opinion, effective communication, leadership, and other team-building skills are essential, but secondary to a shared goal within the team. A shared goal does plenty in establishing a solid foundation and camaderie.

Collaboration is all about creating a space where everyone's voice is valued. This isn't just about talking, but truly integrating different ideas into the strategy. When we combine perspectives, we spark innovation and unlock the best in our teams. The key is setting clear goals upfront. Knowing what we're working towards keeps everyone aligned and focused. For there to be effective collaboration, you need to ensure there is a clear meeting of minds, where the aims of the organisations/businesses have areas of alignment. These don't have to be 100%, however there has to be a clear overlap where the thinking/outcomes/desires are closely attuned. Otherwise and this is seen far too often, a strategic partnership/alliance or take over is announced, however the thing soon fails to hit the heights of the ambitious plans set out in the beginning.

A lot of time, business strategy is relegated to the top echelons of the organization. The Top decides and lets everyone know of the 'strategy' and the actions to achieve them. Not engaging the right people, not communicating the need for change and not allowing others to voice their opinion leads to strategy not being adopted fully. I have always worked with a round table approach, let everyone speak and give feedback. each member shall won the strategy for its success.

Promote Diversity and Inclusion: Embrace diversity in your team by encouraging participation from individuals with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. Diversity sparks creativity and innovation, leading to more robust business strategies. Assign Clear Roles and Responsibilities: Define each team member's role and responsibilities within the business strategy implementation process. Clear expectations help prevent confusion and ensure accountability.

The key thing here is trust and setting it free. Obviously, this is a culture thing, but strive to make people know and believe that everybody can bring their thoughts, ideas, and reflections to the table. Especially important with the GenZ that is used to having a say.

Certa vez participei de um comitê de créditos no Banco e tínhamos como convidados um engenheiro recém formado e uma jornalista (os dois novos no banco) e ao final do comitê eles deram suas percepções: O Engenheiro falou sobre a estrutura do comitê , e os dados das empresas avaliadas e contribuiu muito para o grupo com suas ideias. More importantly than shared leadership or responsibility, is clear leadership. Far too often a collective approach is taken, where decisions are made by groups/committees or leadership roles become shared (e.g. joint/co CEOs). Clear decision making processes, proper empowerment to allow things to be decided is crucial. Otherwise, "the group" hide behind the collective responsibility, nobody is held accountable and, in most cases, the inevitable happens, little or no progress is made. Proper empowerment, allowing the people doing the work to actually make decisions, right or wrong (without retribution for any mistakes), is the way an organisation can effectively move forward.

Shared leadership helps get the best out of everyone. By empowering my team to take ownership of projects using their expertise, we all feel more invested in the strategy's success. This also encourages active participation and lets everyone see the impact of their contributions. Stronger team, stronger results!

ACCEPTANCE OF CORPORATE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES The only way a collaboration can be achieved is if all the parties involved in all the processes agreed on the same goals and objectives. No wonder Bible affirms that two people can not work together without agreement (Amos 3:3)

Some other important items to consider: 1. Create a supportive work environment where team members feel valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their ideas and perspectives. 2. Clearly define roles, responsibilities, and expectations for each team member to ensure clarity and accountability. 3. Encourage collaboration across different departments, teams, and disciplines to leverage diverse expertise and perspectives. 4. Organize team-building activities, workshops, and retreats to foster camaraderie, trust, and collaboration among team members. 5. Recognize and celebrate team achievements and milestones to boost morale and motivation. Similarly, encourage a culture of learning from failure

Adopt a Growth Mindset. Encourage your teams to try different things and fail. Share your failures and have others share theirs. Allow people to work in different ways and engage across the company to try new things. By letting them know failure is learning and their input is desired, you'll foster the collaboration you need.

Use of a different perspective can be really fruitfull to discover the solutions that will move you faster and further ahead. I often use the circular economy as glasses to view the organisation and valuechain through to spot new and smarter solutions.

At the end of the day, there always needs to be a final decision maker, that is what the CEO or business lead is paid to do/be. However, they should not want/need to micro manage to oversee every decision (small or large) instead they set the framework/parameters the team work within/towards. There will be some decisions the business leader needs/has to make which are too important/large for the wider team. To decide, they will need to be provided with all the necessary/relevant information and that is where the trust, devolving of decision making is important, as the wider team has to be trusted to research, select and then present the options. However,this strategic plan also needs to include how it will then be executed by the business.
