Financial security is a critical aspect of your decision to retire or keep working. Examine your savings, pension plans, debts, and potential retirement income sources. Consider seeking advice from a financial planner who can help you understand the implications of retiring now versus later. Remember, your financial health will greatly influence your retirement lifestyle and the degree of flexibility you'll have in your golden years.

Navigating the decision to retire or continue working as a late career professional involves careful consideration of personal, financial, and lifestyle factors. Reflect on your health the most important, financial stability secondly, and long-term goals tertially. Evaluate your passion for your work, spontaenity in action, provision and whether it brings fulfillment. Consult with financial advisors and consider factors like retirement savings, pension benefits, and healthcare coverage. Explore discrete flexible work options, phased retirement, or pursuing new interests. Ultimately, make a decision that aligns with your interests, values and aspirations for the future. Do something that gives you a sense of usefulness to the society.

For many women the lack of a decent pension results in little choice but to keep working. For every £1000 a man has in his pension pot, on average a woman has £200, that's if she has a private pension at all. In the UK even the government say the state pension is not enough to live on yet our potential to put money into a pension is severely limited simply because we are women and give birth to and nurture the next generation. This naturally happens in a woman's younger years so the woman has several breaks in her career for maternity and childcare where her earnings are lower or non existant. It's the money paid into a pension scheme in the early years that compounds to provide a decent pension later. For women this is missing.
Consider what brings you joy and satisfaction in your career. If you're still passionate about your work and feel that it adds value to your life, continuing may be the right choice. Conversely, if the idea of exploring new hobbies, spending time with family, or volunteering excites you, retirement could open those doors. Personal fulfillment is a subjective measure, but it's essential in determining your next steps.
-
Your health is a significant factor in the retirement decision. If your job is physically or mentally taxing, it might be wise to consider whether continuing is in your best interest. On the other hand, if you're in good health and your job isn't a strain, you might opt to continue working. It's important to be honest with yourself about how your job affects your health and well-being.
-
While finances are important, your overall health can be the single most important factor in the retirement decision. "Some day" may never come. As you near retirement age, and for me that begins at age 62 when you are eligible for social security, articulate your goals for your retirement years. Pay particular attention to what your travel plans and dreams are and make sure you frontload those experiences, before health concerns and mobility impede those adventures.
Work often provides a built-in social network and a sense of belonging. Reflect on how retiring will affect your social interactions. Will you maintain friendships outside of work? Do you have plans to engage with your community or join groups that interest you? The social aspect of work is an important consideration, as it can significantly impact your overall happiness.
-
Your career likely plays a big role in how you see yourself and your sense of purpose. Think about how retiring might change this perception and whether you're comfortable with that shift. Some find new ventures or hobbies that provide equal fulfillment, while others struggle with the loss of their professional identity. It's crucial to plan for this psychological transition.
-
I firmly believe that the best question to ask yourself as you consider retirement is "Do I Live to work or Do I work to live" Those that live to work seem to have a very difficult time without a professional identity, continue to work longer and struggle when their "career" identity no longer exists. Some people can strike the balance, but retirement can create imbalance.
Finally, consider how retirement might affect your intellectual engagement and opportunities for lifelong learning. Staying in the workforce could provide ongoing intellectual stimulation and skill development. Alternatively, retirement could give you the time to pursue educational interests you've put on hold. Lifelong learning is vital for mental agility and can be a source of great joy and satisfaction.
-
As a teacher and healthcare provider I have always practiced lifelong learning. A favorite quote from one of my teachers - "When the apple gets ripe it begins to rot." I think of myself as an apple tree - always reading, learning and engaging in new experiences so that my tree can bear new fruit.
-
Another way of enjoying your golden years is finding a balance between your work load and your lifestyle. In other words: work less hours specially if you are a professional expert or work online, and save more time for improving your lifestyle. Find more time for engaging in a suitable sport, spend more time with family, go for touristic adventures .....
