When an unexpected question catches you off guard, the first thing to do is stay calm. Your ability to remain composed under pressure is a valuable trait that employers look for. Take a deep breath and give yourself a moment to think. Remember, it's perfectly acceptable to pause before answering. This brief moment allows you to collect your thoughts and prevents you from giving a rushed or panicked response. Conveying calmness and control can sometimes be as impressive as the answer itself.

Remember that sometimes it is a test of your character, personality, and professionalism. If the question is not clear, ask them to expand. When confronted with challenging or unexpected interview questions, I remain composed and focus on understanding the underlying intent. I may ask for clarification if needed and draw upon relevant experiences or skills to provide a thoughtful response. Honesty and humility are key, so I don't hesitate to admit if I don't know the answer but express willingness to learn or explore the topic further.

The first thing i always do is to try to rephrase the question intelligently by restating what was asked to be sure and also to gain more understanding. The second thing i do is to take a glass of water to help me become more relaxed before i attempt to answer the question. One personal act that i have deployed for over many months is the introduction of professional humor into atmosphere to gain the attention of the interviewer, which helps them remain calm and more relaxed while you take that short time to reflect on your answer.

Before diving into your answer, make sure you fully understand the question. It's okay to ask for clarification if something isn't clear. This demonstrates your attention to detail and ensures that you're addressing the right issue. Paraphrasing the question back to the interviewer is a good strategy to confirm your understanding. It also buys you some additional time to formulate your thoughts and shows that you're actively engaged in the conversation.

Esteja realmente dedicado a entender o questionamento. E se não souber responder, não invente história. Pois nesse momento o importante é mostrar que você tem uma caixa sempre disposta a receber mais ferramentas.
Once you understand the question, structure your thoughts in a clear and concise manner. Organize your response with a beginning, middle, and end. This not only helps you convey your answer more effectively but also makes it easier for the interviewer to follow. If the question is complex, breaking down your answer into smaller, digestible parts can be particularly helpful. A structured response demonstrates your ability to think logically and communicate clearly.

O importante aqui é fazer ser entendido. Então, o menos é mais. Não se perca tentando entregar mais do que realmente pode. Não tente impressionar. Apenas seja fiel ao que você tem.
If you encounter a question that you don't know the answer to, honesty is the best policy. Admitting that you're unsure shows integrity and self-awareness. Follow up by expressing your eagerness to learn or describe how you would find the answer. This approach can turn a potential weakness into a display of your problem-solving skills and your commitment to professional growth.

If I don’t know the answer to unexpected questions asked in interview, I would not try to attempt it but I will definitely try to find out after the interview and let interviewer know that I don’t know the answer and will find out. One does not have to know everything, and that’s why even in big companies every one does different things and even after hired when some questions arises where as a team we all have to find an answer.
Using real-life examples to illustrate your points can make your answers more compelling and memorable. Relate the question to your past experiences, explaining how you've dealt with similar situations. This not only provides evidence of your skills but also gives the interviewer insight into how you apply them in practice. Stories and examples make your responses more personal and engaging, which can help you stand out from other candidates.
Finally, project confidence throughout your response. Even if the question is challenging, showing that you believe in your abilities can make a powerful statement. Use positive language, maintain eye contact, and pay attention to your body language. Confidence shouldn't be confused with arrogance; it's about expressing a quiet assurance in your capabilities and experiences. Remember, how you say something can be just as important as what you say.
-
Just stay result-oriented. STAR method works wonders - situation, task, action, result. And your confidence will help you out as well.
