Let me start by saying that I have learned far more from my failures than I ever have from my successes in life. Setbacks in a career can be devastating and may seem like the end of the world at the time, however, they can also be a time of reflection and growth. They can be seen as an opportunity to go in a direction that you may have entertained the thought of for years and just never had the time to pursue. It also may be a time to reflect on the level of satisfaction and meaning your career has for you. Setbacks in your career are inevitable as they are in every other area of life, but they don’t have to mean the end. They can actually be a new beginning.

Facing a setback in your career is an opportunity to reflect on your purpose and desires. Sometimes, revisiting moments from high school, college, or early in your career when you were forming your work identity can provide answers and help realign your path. Additionally, facing a setback can prompt introspection about what went wrong and confronting your imperfections. This process of facing your imperfections can lead to new discoveries.

Personally, I welcomed the ton of breaks that came in between my struggle to keep the same pace and nature of what was extremely useful in my professional curriculum! But letting go of that schedule opened ideas and innovations, & how that the same environment would not have offered me the growth! Not all falls are bad!
Gathering feedback is a crucial step in understanding your strengths. Reach out to colleagues, mentors, or friends who know your work ethic and ask for their honest opinions on your best qualities. Sometimes, others can see strengths in you that you might overlook. This external perspective can provide valuable insights and help you see yourself in a new light. Remember, feedback is not just about praise; constructive criticism is equally important for growth and can highlight areas where your strengths could make the most impact.
Analyzing your setbacks with a clear and objective mindset is a vital part of uncovering your strengths. Look at the situations that didn't go as planned and ask yourself what skills or attributes could have changed the outcome. This isn't about dwelling on the past but about understanding how your unique abilities can influence future success. It's also an opportunity to identify any gaps in your skill set that you can work on improving, thereby turning a setback into a setup for future achievements.

Set backs are an opportunity to make a come back. Therefore, it is important to assess what is contributing to your set back, what did you take away from it and look to develop a plan that helps you leverage your setback to make a stronger comeback. Furthermore, it is key to identify ways to cope with future set backs by using resources and tools because to help you solve setback problems. Resiliency, purpose and having an accountability mindset will help you to never settle with being stuck in the mud of future setbacks that limit your ability to move forward. In closing, coaching and strategy can be your accountability partner.
After identifying your strengths and areas for growth, it's time to realign your career goals. Set achievable objectives that play to your strengths and consider how they can be leveraged in your current role or a new direction. Goal setting is not just about reaching for the stars; it's about creating a realistic and motivating plan that acknowledges your abilities and encourages you to push beyond your comfort zone. This step ensures that your career trajectory is in harmony with your personal strengths and values.
With a clear understanding of your strengths and goals, focus on expanding your skill set to align with them. Look for training programs, workshops, or online courses that can enhance your existing skills or help you develop new ones. This proactive approach not only makes you more adaptable to changes in your career but also demonstrates a commitment to personal development that employers value. Continuous learning is key to staying relevant and resilient in the ever-evolving job market.
Finally, embracing change is essential when facing career setbacks. Your career is not static, and neither are you. Be open to new opportunities that may arise from unexpected places. Flexibility and adaptability are strengths in themselves, and by being willing to step out of your comfort zone, you can discover new paths that align with your skills and passions. Change can be daunting, but it's also the catalyst for growth and innovation in your career.

One key mindset shift is realizing that change itself is actually easy. The real challenge lies in feeling secure enough to make a change when you're weighed down by worries, fears, and doubts. So, the trick is to focus on doing the things that will yield benefits.
