What do you do if your confidence is wavering in a leadership role?
Facing moments of doubt is a common experience for leaders. When your confidence begins to wane, it can feel like your ability to guide and inspire is slipping through your fingers. But it's crucial to recognize that these feelings are a normal part of the leadership journey. As you encounter challenges, it's important to have strategies to restore your confidence and maintain your effectiveness as a leader. Remember, managing stress and bolstering your assertiveness are key to overcoming these hurdles and emerging even stronger.
Take a moment to step back and reflect on what's causing your confidence to waver. Is it a particular event, feedback, or the pressure of expectations? Use this time to reassess your goals and values. Sometimes, the root of the problem isn't your capability but rather a misalignment between your role and your personal principles or strengths. Reflecting helps you gain clarity on what changes you may need to make, whether it's adjusting your approach or seeking support in areas where you feel less confident.

Ya know what, leaders are human too. When leaders strive to display their humanness then it stops being so jarring when you have a human moment. We are supposed to be humans humaning. That is who we are.

Getting butterfly in stomach, in whatever situation is not necessarily an unwanted position. Such positions are indicators of areas of improvement. A good leader or person on path to become one, is able to identify such spots and then act on an improvement plan. A person who does not feel 'wavering of confidence' situations, may actually be unaware of 'self' or 'overconfident' and they are all not desirable. First step for a higher EI is self awareness. Second, if you keep getting such feeling in different and new situations then it is also an indication that the person is pushing his boundaries to area of discomfort, a clear indication of growth.
-
A leader confidence will be challenged from time to time. The corporate world is a constant changing environment and confidence can waver if the leader does not adjust to change. Some changes like new Senior Management Team arriving with new policies, new ways of doing things, may challenge your confidence in the role you are performing simply by the change of the Management dynamics. Other changes caused by outside events can waver your confidence in the role, such as new legal requirements, new procedures and others. In every situation, a good deep breath always helps to get your bearings. Try to learn from these experiences and push yourself to be better. Being confident is a mindset. Try it.

My journey begins with a spiritual awakening. Praying and meditating on God's word for 15 mins starts my day as often as I can because I know when I open my bedroom door the calamity begins. My high energy job offers lots of negative streams which can gather me in so If my mind and heart are prepared, I can best serve my co-workers who are as equally overwhelmed by the decreasing work force and increasing job demands.

In my coaching with top lawyers and financiers around the World, it no longer surprises me to hear about another “Imposter” running around in Accomplishment Clothing. Why do successful people struggle with what’s called Imposter Syndrome? First off, let’s call it what it really is: ImposterISM. It’s not a syndrome…its part of a belief system or thought process. Now, with this accurate definition, we can more readily shift beliefs than “cure” a syndrome, right? Secondly, ImposterISM is when humility and anxiety hook up. If we recognize it from the humble place only, it’s a line of thinking that can allow us to develop. We can reduce the anxiety from the mix by embracing humility and bringing the growth opportunity to the forefront.

I learned a critical lesson early in my life, during my days in the Indian Army: You will always need the support of others. This truth has been foundational in understanding the importance of building a support network, particularly in leadership roles. An operational network is crucial for day-to-day support, helping to manage immediate challenges and ensuring the seamless execution of tasks. A strategic network becomes invaluable for navigating major decisions, offering diverse perspectives and wisdom that can significantly impact long-term success. Together, these networks not only reinforce your confidence but also equip you with the resources and backing needed to lead effectively and make informed decisions.

Every leader has a leadership character and skills. At wavering confidence signs, one has to ascertain the potential source of instability. Personality traits - Control/Energy/Affection/Will and Emotionality should be the first to be researched. Self-awareness is key to effective leadership self-management. Valid personality profiles (Facet5) are valuable tools to assist. Once we are aware of our fundament, we can evaluate our skill set - have we, as leaders, sophisticated our people management skills to a level where we feel psychologically safe ourselves first and then provide safety to others - peers, team, partners. Skills can be assessed through respective valid and science-based development center methodology.
-
When confidence wavers in leadership, it's natural. Reflect on past successes, acknowledge strengths, and embrace vulnerability. Seek support from mentors or peers, and remember that growth comes from challenges. With resilience and self-belief, you'll rise stronger, leading with authenticity and empathy.
-
Reflection is important. However, if you are feeling low then reflecting on your own can sometimes be a hindrance. If we feel low, and or negative about ourselves it is important that we acknowledge if we can positively reflect on our own - without taking us further along a negative route. One useful one is to take a moment and identify someone you feel safe with - someone you are comfortable exposing your vulnerabilities. Then brief them. The brief needs to be: this is happening in my life, I need ot reflect and I need some objective assistance to do that. I would appreciate you actively listening and asking me probing questions and feel free to challenge me if you think I am being too easy or hard on myself - in my reflections.

Leadership is hard to learn, and it can atrophy over time. There are three avanues of attack to address this deficiency. 1. Work on your leadership style. Self confidence can come from something as simple as identifying what leadership styles are appropriate for you and your prevailing circumstances. 2. Involve your subordinates, and especially your subject matter experts, more often. Empower them to bring you recommendations and to engage with you candidly. 3. Find a mentor. You will often learn more from your mistakes than your successes, but having a mentor can help you either avoid mistakes in the first place.
One of the most constructive actions you can take is to seek honest feedback from trusted colleagues or mentors. This can provide you with a different perspective on your leadership style and effectiveness. Feedback, when taken in a constructive manner, can highlight areas of strength you weren't aware of and pinpoint aspects that might need improvement. It's essential to approach this with an open mind and a willingness to grow, rather than a defensive attitude.
-
You will never be a leader without a team. You are a leader because they support you, help you and build with you. So your team is part of your role, every team is different and every leader too. You might be a natural leader and you might not need feedback from your team as they will follow you no matter what. However if you are not a natural leader, you need to build up the team and your role with them. Take the time to gather feedback. Be careful with the questions you ask: not all feedback is to take and apply. Take the time to ask them - for their expectations and - what they need from you. Just listen. Do not answer or justify why or why not you are not doing it or going to do. Take notes, they will give you all the answers.
-
Becoming a great leader is a journey of continuous learning and growth. It’s a process that thrives on embracing challenges, seeking feedback, fostering connections, and cultivating understanding. Remember, confidence isn’t about being cocky; it’s about believing in your abilities while remaining open to growth. 🌟

Stuck in a Leadership Rut? Get Feedback and Fly! Feeling like your leadership skills are on autopilot? Don't be afraid to hit the refresh button! Seeking honest feedback from colleagues you trust is a game-changer. They can offer a fresh perspective on your style and effectiveness. Think of it like getting a leadership X-ray. Feedback can reveal hidden strengths you never knew you had, along with areas for growth. But the key is approaching it with an open mind, not a shield. Remember, growth comes from embracing constructive criticism, not fearing it. So step out of your comfort zone, gather that feedback, and take your leadership to the next level!
-
Self awareness is key to life, and especially to leadership. If you are open enough to understand that other people's perception of you may be way different to your perception of yourself (and or your leadership style) and be aware enough to take action on what you can change to create a better result then you won't go wrong. For example, several clients have come to me after stepping into new leadership positions and doubting their 'right' to be there. (Impostor syndrome if you will, or sometimes a general sense of low self-worth and/or esteem) In seeking feedback from those they'd worked with before about things that they valued in my client, my clients were able to adjust how they see themselves. The same is true with difficulties.
-
As a role of leader seeking feedback is important . feedbacks helps you to improve your leadership skills. so on a team feedbacks are important which affect your effect in a team. taking feedback help to improve communication with your teammates and also help to gain their trust. which help you during your leadership role.
-
Honest feedback is vital to leadership success here are my top two reasons listed below: 1. Self-awareness: Honest feedback provides leaders with a clear understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. It allows them to recognize areas where they excel and areas that need improvement. This self-awareness is essential for personal growth and development as a leader. 2. Better decision-making: Honest feedback helps leaders make better decisions. By understanding how their actions and decisions impact others, leaders can make more informed choices that benefit their team and organization as a whole.
-
-
Feedback is highly valued... when it comes from the right resource(s). Good feedback is critical to leadership success, poor feedback can send you down an unwelcomed rabbit hole. Do you have a mentor or coach? Can you get candid feedback from your team? Does your company offer any type of 360 review process? When I do a "check-in" for feedback, I ensure it's a safe place for all to share. I focus on effective listening, and work hard to not be defensive. One of the things I have learned about myself is that most feedback comes in a 1:1 or small group. So this means you have to make time to seek feedback. Be considerate, place value in the feedback session, and then select what makes sense for you to act on. Good Luck.
-
Leaders should ALLWAYS be in constant feedback mode from their must trusted team members. A Leader should know who to talk to for any different situation, not all team members, mentors, colleagues have the same point of view, regarding each situation.

If you've identified specific areas where you feel less confident, consider engaging in targeted skill development. This could involve formal training, reading, or working with a coach. Skill-building not only improves your competencies but also boosts your confidence through the knowledge that you are actively working to become a better leader. Remember, leadership is a journey of continuous learning and growth.
-
As a rugby player, I struggled to catch high kicks under flood lights. I did it, but with less consistency than normal and it damaged my confidence. The effect was viral and started to affect other parts of my performance and my overall confidence. Confidence can sometimes be a balloon, it grows, but one bad moment can destroy it all. Instead build a wall of small successes where a missing brick doesn't affect the whole structure. That means working specifically on one skill with intention. Don't hide from it. But the essential thing is to do enough to minimise risk, but remember where you are excellent and build that excellence through practice. Minimise risk but optimise excellence through intentional practice

-
All of us play to strengths. It is arguable that sometimes strengths are weaknesses & vice versa. How decide you aren't confident in an area should be tied to your purpose & meaning. I've met leaders who desire to improve a technical skill, when actually they've risen above the level that they should be involved in such decisions. A desire to be tied to past success/what made you successful, may not deliver future success. Make sure that you are focused on what you, your team, your boss, thinks would help. Write them down as headlines & reflect. What inspires you, break down into managable chunks: seek sources of learning & application. If you don't feel inspired by what you wrote, you'll avoid improving and feel bad!

The #1 skill you need to build as a leader is communication. Know your communication style and how it will be really challenging for some people - no matter your style - it will annoy someone or some types of people. They say 'do as you would be done by'/'speak as you would be spoken to.' But that is not the best to get the best out of others. Building your adaptivity skills so you can do as others would be done by and speak as they would be spoken to will get a shift in impact and results. Lots of leaders still need to build confidence in speaking in front of others and I have even had a couple of clients self-aware enough to know their style might come across as blunt or arrogant and worked with me to be more adaptive and considerate!

If you aren't learning you are stagnant or dying. Leadership is ongoing learning all the time. I try work on one significant skill build per year, maybe two. For me, I set aside 15 minutes EVERYDAY, usually in the morning for my skill build. If you do this within 6-9 months you will be in the top 5-10% in your skill set. All of my skill builds are designed for me to deliver higher value to my team/company. Here are a few examples to consider: 1) Six Sigma Certification 2) Scrum Master " 3) Tableau " 4) Performance Coaching from Dale Carnegie 5) Learning to use Canva 6) Learning to use Hubspot These have provided framework for growth. They also set the table for my team that we are always learning. Good Luck!

Leaders should always be two steps ahead of their team members, if not possible because of the skillset needed is not his/hers strong point, "At least" should be able to understand the specific skills from their team members, so they can apply broad knowledge and expertise helping on any situation.
Visualizing success can be a powerful tool in regaining your confidence. Imagine yourself handling challenging situations with poise and decisiveness. This practice can help condition your mind to respond more confidently in real-life scenarios. By regularly visualizing positive outcomes, you can build a mental reservoir of confidence that you can draw upon when faced with leadership challenges.
-
The book "The Confident Mind - Zinsser" provides an outstanding summary of visualization and confidence building methods and how to implement them.
-
Great exercise. What does success look like? Don't just ask yourself, seek feedback: it is a very powerful question. I've coached many leaders who desire extrinsic things: promotion, money; but feeling good about yourself radiates. If you fix your mind on failure, then you look for indicators of failure. It is a painful way of creating the reality you imagine. If you fix your mind on achievement and success, look for the positive in every situation, then you give yourself a boost, motivation. I think it also important to be prepared with great positive questions How can this be better? Makes you strong How did this go wrong? Gives you a list of bad things and why. Approach ever day with "lucky me" and find reasons why; never think poor me!.
-
Positive visualization is like creating a mental movie of good things happening. When a leader imagines themselves succeeding and handling challenges well, it boosts their confidence. It's like giving themselves a pep talk in their mind. This positive thinking helps push away negative thoughts and makes them feel more hopeful and determined and ready to tackle their responsibilities. It's like seeing the happy ending of a story before it even happens.
-
In my experience, I have learned that visualizing is one part of the process. When you visualize, you are affirming that you are an aware co-creator of this world. However, the “seeing” is one part of the process, that has to be followed by feeling, and gratitude. Feeling is not only referred to emotions, that carry different typologies of frequency. The feeling is “adding love into what you see”, that which is the most powerful energy in the universe. Be consistent in visualizing, feeling, and celebrating yourself in the appropriate leadership, to anchor this in the outside. All others will perceive this. Before anything else, we “perceive”, even though only a few are aware of it.
-
Visualizing success and positive outcomes can help reinforce confidence and self-belief, even in challenging situations. By picturing yourself effectively leading and achieving your goals, you can counteract doubts and fears. This technique is supported by psychological research on the power of visualization in enhancing performance and confidence. Additionally, positive visualization can serve as a motivational tool, inspiring you to take action and persevere through obstacles.

When I feel some lack of confidence with my leadership decisions I just go in front of the mirror and try to convince myself the MAIN reasons why the situations needs it to happen in certain ways. So, when I talk to myself continuously I become more confident in pitching my leaderships goals and ideas to others in a more justified way.
-
See Yourself Soar: The Power of Positive Visualization Feeling shaky in your leadership shoes? Don't underestimate the power of your mind! Imagine yourself as the confident leader you aspire to be. Picture yourself tackling tough situations. This positive visualization isn't just wishful thinking; it's a training tool for your brain. By repeatedly rehearsing success in your mind, you're conditioning yourself to respond more confidently when faced with real-world challenges. . The more you visualize yourself crossing the finish line, the more prepared your body becomes for the actual event. In the same way, visualizing positive leadership outcomes builds a mental reservoir of confidence you can tap into when things get tough.
-

Never underestimate the importance of self-care in maintaining your confidence. Stress can erode self-assurance, so it's vital to manage it effectively. This means getting enough rest, eating well, exercising, and finding time for activities that recharge you. When you're physically and mentally well, you're more resilient and better equipped to handle the pressures of leadership with confidence.
-
All the points mentioned here are crucial but the one I could resonate with the most is self-care, esp. as a Self-Love Lifestyle Advocate & Life Clarity Mentor. When confidence wavers in a leadership role, it's crucial to prioritize self-care and introspection. Begin by gaining clarity about yourself- identify your strengths and weaknesses and accept yourself just the way you are. Accept the fact that imperfections are part of being human. Embrace self-care practices that nourish your mind, body, and spirit. This could include mindfulness exercises, journaling or seeking support from a mentor or coach. Understanding + accepting yourself = self-confidence. And this self-confidence empowers you to lead with authenticity and resilience.
-
Go ahead.
-

Leading with Confidence Starts with Taking Care of You Feeling burnt out? Don't let it zap your leadership mojo! Confidence takes a nosedive when stress takes over. Here's the fix: Recharge: Make sleep a priority. A well-rested mind is a confident mind. Fuel Up: Ditch the junk. Nourish your body with healthy food for sustained energy. Move It: Exercise is a stress-buster and a confidence booster. Find an activity you enjoy, even if it's just a brisk walk. Do You: Schedule de-stressing activities you love. Whether it's reading, spending time in nature, or catching up with friends, make time for what fills your cup. Remember, a leader who prioritizes self-care is a leader who exudes confidence.
-
In my experience, self-care starts with withdrawing attention from the outside and leading it back to yourself. Have you ever wondered how often you consciously or unconsciously make comparisons with others or with other situations? When you invest time making comparisons, you likely give away your power to the “outside”. What other people do is their business and investing too much of your time looking at other people's things is an improper investment of your energy and leads to frustration and doubts. Self-care requires time for yourself, and an appropriate and healthy balance between you and the outside.
-
To truly champion self-care, a leader must harness high energy to tackle any challenge or need. Achieving this mobilizing energy requires a crucial reset. Engage in preferred activities that serve as a "battery recharge." This approach not only bolsters functional capacity and value across all life facets but also underscores the importance of self-care in sustaining leadership vitality and effectiveness.
-
Leaders need support too. One of the best things you can do for your self care is to ask for help. It is not a sign of weakness - it's a sign of incredible strength, to know that you can't solve it all on your own. The ability to ask for what you need, and to let others know what's making you wobble so you can create better structures will only ever benefit you.
-
In essence, self-care is essential for a leader's confidence because it promotes mental and emotional well-being, enhances clarity and focus, prevents burnout, promotes physical health, sets a positive example for others, and boosts self-esteem. By prioritizing self-care, leaders can cultivate the confidence they need to lead effectively and inspire their teams to achieve success.

-
If you don't take time to care for you, no one will. I can recall one role, that was my "dream role", well for the first 90 days. Soon the stress level started to escalate. Being asked and expected to provide solutions that were well outside my responsibilities. And the expectations were not constant, in fact they changed day to day. One of the things I recognized is that I needed to get out of the office, I used to bring my lunch, but that made me accessible. I started walking at lunch, or eating at a picnic table near the office, and what a difference it made. It enabled me to reset, breathe, and relax a little bit. I eventually left the role (to their surprise) as the stress and expectation did not align with my goals. Good Luck!
Lastly, building resilience is key to enduring the ups and downs of leadership. Resilience allows you to bounce back from setbacks and view failures as opportunities for growth. It involves maintaining a positive outlook, being adaptable, and having the perseverance to push through tough times. By fostering resilience, you can maintain your confidence even when faced with adversity.
-
Your mindset determines how you see events and the world. when your confidence is wavering take time to do the following. 1. Review your accomplishments or remember why you became a leader in the first place. 2. Use that positive and uplifting information and feelings to adjust your mindset to be more positive. 3. harness those thoughts and feelings, solidify them in your heart and mind and create an anchor to remind yourself of this mindset. 4. Use that anchor to remind yourself when you feel your confidence lacking to boost your mindset and mood. This can help you build resilience and navigate the eb and flow of confidence.
-
As a leader, adaptability is vital in navigating the ever-changing business landscape. It involves being open to new ideas, willing to embrace change, and agile in responding to challenges. A leaders ability to adapt enables them to steer the company through uncertainties and capitalize on emerging opportunities. This means continuously assessing market trends, customer preferences, and industry disruptions, and adjusting strategies accordingly. It also entails encouraging a culture of innovation and flexibility, empowering employees to contribute ideas and adapt to changing circumstances. Ultimately, adaptability allows a leader to create resilience, drive sustainable growth, and ensure the long-term success of the company.

My kids were born with strong personalities, and I mean STRONG. As in since they were zero years old, when they wanted something, they would NOT give up. No tricks or methods worked other than patience, determination and my ability to be even stronger! But every time they drove me to the brink of insanity, I told myself, this is the best gift they were born with and as a parent I am so glad they have it, and I only want to encourage it (when reasonable!). With the rapid pace and complexity of today's world and the unavoidable struggles each person WILL face, being resilient, knowing how to move past, and move ON, is the greatest and most effective quality you can foster for success as a human and most definitely as a leader!
-

Bounce Back Like a Leader: Building Resilience Let's face it, leadership isn't always smooth sailing. There will be bumps and setbacks. The key is to be the leader who weathers the storm with confidence. That's where resilience comes in. It's your bounce-back superpower! Resilient leaders see setbacks as stepping stones, not roadblocks. They stay positive, adapt to challenges, and have the grit to keep going. How do you build this superpower? Here's the secret: It's not about never feeling down; it's about getting back up faster. Believe in yourself, embrace change, and develop a never-give-up attitude. Remember, every bump teaches you valuable lessons that make you a stronger, more confident leader.
-
Confidence is both subjective and situational. If you've got a natural skill or something you learnt when you were young, you're probably confident in it. For example I am a confident horse rider-however -if I had a bad accident, or you change the situation, that confidence might dwindle - please don't ask me to ride at the Olympics! Confidence is also something that you can build. One thing I would say as a leader that would be essential for you to consider is learning how to have challenging conversations. These will always come up whether they are conversations 'up' or 'down' or to group. Take a breath. Know yourself. And remember - you are not expected to know everything, you are a leader - not the Oracle - and you can do this.
-
Understanding and leveraging your unique strengths is crucial for boosting self-assurance. Recognizing how these strengths manifest in your work environment is key. When you align with your authentic nature, confidence and self-worth naturally increase. By living authentically and adapting to your own energy, you uncover your true purpose, elevating self-worth. Adopting a strengths-based approach empowers us to navigate challenges, communicate effectively, and build genuine connections. Despite moments of feeling disempowered, remember your capability to achieve anything you set your mind to. Lead with an open heart and listen to your inner voice, allowing yourself the grace to rest when needed. Hope this resonates with you.
-
Confidence is a condition of context, not character. Evidence: everyone has a situation or environment where they feel confident. If your confidence has taken a hit, I bet something happened that made you doubt the rules of your environment. Something you thought couldn't happen, did. You are still the same person with the same skills, capabilities, and traits. So you were wrong, and something "impossible" happened—now you have new information you didn't have before. You're as good as you were plus more experienced than you were. That combo means you have the potential to be an even better leader than before. You've got this!
-
-
I think it depends on the situation. When making strategic decisions and you have time I think sleeping on decisions is a great cure for doubts of all types of which a crisis in confidence is just one. When it is a situation that needs an immediate decision I usually call a time out for some reason. All you need is a few minutes to consider your decision. Then use that time to check your stance with a colleague if possible or if you are on your own some fresh air and a brisk walk usually gets the positive chemicals working and you can then communicate your decision

Leveraging quantum coaching for mindful living to address confidence and stress, I recommend the RESET tool. It outlines steps to: 1. Energize and understand the roots of self-doubt. 2. When you're not feeling very confident as a leader, there are some things you can do to feel better. First, try telling yourself positive things and imagining yourself doing well. Look up to people who have done great things for inspiration. Be good with managing your time, be ready to change plans if needed, and remember to celebrate when things go right. Make sure to have friends or family to talk to when you're feeling down, and keep learning new things to get better at what you do. Don't forget to take breaks and take care of yourself too. By doing these things, you can start feeling more sure of yourself and handle any challenges that come your way as a leader.

Stopping and doing something unrelated often brings me to re-remember what I do have confidence in i.e. I find gardening is a brilliant outdoor activity to work through dips in my confidence as it is an ongoing process, gets me into my body and out of my head. My confidence is restored through engaging in a full body experience where so much is out of my control yet my tending to the garden, seeds and plants guides me back to the natural cycle of all things.
