Know Why You're Speaking 4. Know What You Want to Achieve In my "Space Communication Course for young adults," I emphasize that what you say may not be what others hear. It's important to recognise and overcome any pre-assumptions your audience may have. Remember, effective communication isn’t only about transmitting information—it’s also about creating connections, fostering understanding, and building strong relationships. Keep it simple and direct to ensure effective communication and try and connect with your audience.
Adapting your delivery is key to connecting with various audiences. If technical terms are necessary, ensure you define them clearly. Adjust the complexity of your language based on the listener's expertise. For visual learners, consider using diagrams or charts to illustrate complex systems or processes. For those who prefer a more narrative approach, frame your information within a story or scenario that they can relate to. The goal is to make your communication as inclusive and comprehensible as possible for everyone involved.
Flexibility is an important trait for any systems engineer. When it comes to communication, being flexible means being willing to change your approach on the fly if it's clear that your message isn't landing.
