A long time ago, a senior leader gave me some advice which I thought was frankly dumb (I was very young in my career). That advice was if you want to be promoted do your current job and do the job you want. She has a point, but I didn't realize what she meant until much later in my career. You want a promotion? Prove you can handle it by taking on the work of that new role by stepping in and doing some of that role. And keep track of what you did - so you can advocate for yourself when it comes to your performance review.

I have always believed if you want to get noticed you do more and accomplish more then the average individual. Most people just want to get by with as little as they can. They don’t want to be in the lower 10% because they will probably get fired and they don’t want to be in the upper 10% because they are unwilling to work that hard. So they skate along with the majority of the pack and are content with just being average. Never ever be happy with average. You will get noticed when you choose to do more, take on more and become better at your skill set.

As soon as a management position has to be filled, a long list and a short list are often initially created. Without prior personal contact it is difficult to get a place on the list and therewith a promotion.

Sometimes the qualified and eligible performers don't dare to clearly communicate with the line manager the issue of promotion due to various reasons, therefore it is required to get rid of the situation.

Especially in workplace cultures where promotions and development aren't clear, it's important to speak about your goals with your manager regularly. - You can do this by bringing it up in your 1:1s and reminding them of the successes and projects you've been working on. - Asking them for feedback and what you would need to do to get a promotion. - If this isn't going well with your manager and you don't see a promotion coming in (what you determine) a reasonable time, it may be time to find a new company that will support the development and progress that you want for your career. Remember: YOU are the captain of YOUR career, and if others aren't supporting you, it's a sign you'll need to look elsewhere.
