What do you do if you want to show you're ready for a promotion in your current role?

Promotions entail additional responsibilities . To signal you are ready, one must shoulder more responsibilities and try to deliver things which are beyond expectations. Show the decision makers that you are ready to bite more and chew it as well.. and can swallow it too :)

A long time ago, a senior leader gave me some advice which I thought was frankly dumb (I was very young in my career). That advice was if you want to be promoted do your current job and do the job you want. She has a point, but I didn't realize what she meant until much later in my career. You want a promotion? Prove you can handle it by taking on the work of that new role by stepping in and doing some of that role. And keep track of what you did - so you can advocate for yourself when it comes to your performance review.

I have always believed if you want to get noticed you do more and accomplish more then the average individual. Most people just want to get by with as little as they can. They don’t want to be in the lower 10% because they will probably get fired and they don’t want to be in the upper 10% because they are unwilling to work that hard. So they skate along with the majority of the pack and are content with just being average. Never ever be happy with average. You will get noticed when you choose to do more, take on more and become better at your skill set.

Demonstrate expertise: Make sure you are constantly improving your skills &knowledge in your current role to show that you are ready for the next level. Leadership qualities: Take the initiative to lead teams,show that you can motivate & inspire others,& have strong decision-making skills. Seek feedback: Ask for feedback from your supervisors so that you can improve and be excel in your current role. Communicate your interest: Let your supervisors know that you are interested in advancing within the organization & discuss any opportunities for growth/promotion.

First, one should be clear that performance and potential are two different aspects. you can be a star performer in your current role but still may not handle a step-up role. To be promotion-ready in the eyes of the management, one should always be aware of not only the expectations from his/her current role but also the role one is targeting. Trying to understand and deliver at that level will make you more competent in handling the higher role and may increase your chances of reaching it.

Actively seek out and volunteer for challenging assignments that go beyond your usual responsibilities. Taking on these projects shows initiative, a willingness to grow, and the capability to handle increased responsibility. Make sure your contributions are visible: document your successes, share your project outcomes with key stakeholders, and ask for feedback to continually improve. Additionally, regularly communicate your career aspirations to mentors to align your efforts with the organization's needs. Show your commitment and position yourself as a proactive and valuable candidate for advancement. Don't rely on overt self promotion - let your actions speak for you!

Get ready to get your promotion by setting clear goals by focussing on your aim. Do excellent in your current profile and get some constructive feedback. Specifically ask for feedback on your ability and timeline for moving up in the organisation. If there are clear requirements for the next level, make a list of examples for how you have shown you're already doing this. Often we get stuck in the trap of just doing more - you need to ensure that you're doing the right things to move up.

In my experience of working with top talent, they tend to have a strong understanding of the organisational strategy, link their work to that strategy and lean into opportunities that demonstrate their capability at the next level. Showing leadership can take many shapes and forms, being creative and looking at how you can lead from anywhere in the organisation is a critical skill.

In order to be considered for a promotion, it is important to maintain good contacts not only with your direct superior, but also with those higher up in the hierarchy. As soon as a management position has to be filled, a long list and a short list are often initially created. Without prior personal contact it is difficult to get a place on the list and therewith a promotion.

Strategically building relationships is key. Your stakeholders and others in the organisation need to be aware of you, your work and the contribution you bring. Developing rapport, discussing projects, sharing insights or wins, contributing well in meetings all showcase your knowledge and value to the contribution. Know that you have to be known to be promoted.

I think confident and clear communication is required with your line manager while you achieve the delegated tasks successfully. Your mindset is playing a critical role in getting the promotion. Sometimes the qualified and eligible performers don't dare to clearly communicate with the line manager the issue of promotion due to various reasons, therefore it is required to get rid of the situation.

Especially in workplace cultures where promotions and development aren't clear, it's important to speak about your goals with your manager regularly. - You can do this by bringing it up in your 1:1s and reminding them of the successes and projects you've been working on. - Asking them for feedback and what you would need to do to get a promotion. - If this isn't going well with your manager and you don't see a promotion coming in (what you determine) a reasonable time, it may be time to find a new company that will support the development and progress that you want for your career. Remember: YOU are the captain of YOUR career, and if others aren't supporting you, it's a sign you'll need to look elsewhere.
