Maybe try building a game with a unique control scheme or a game that uses a particular mechanic in an unexpected way.

I like to look for game concepts that are near existing ones, but in little side pockets that are not as well explored. There are tons of games about racing cars, fighting monsters, and surviving the apocalypse. How about games where you work on a pit crew, study monsters, or prepare for the apocalypse? There have been some really surprising successes in nontraditional gameplay loops lately. Things like Powerwash Simulator, Euro Truck Simulator, and Hatoful Boyfriend that aim to create fun out of things that many people would never consider enjoyable. Pick a couple really weird ideas, prototype them, then iterate a bunch of times and see what stands out.

The most important part of being creating or having a creative influence is getting creative! (So much creative in one sentence, LOL.) Although my career focus moves me toward the technical side of the game industry, one of my biggest motivators to pursuing making games started with understanding how the art was made. Now I have over a decade of experience in Art and Illustration, yet my progress never stops! Because of my creativity in one medium, it helps me branch out to others like graphic design, traditional drawings of prototype frames and being able to make projects and interface visually appealing.
