"It's not what you know; it's who knows what you know" - a saying in academia that is applicable in this case. But there is also something more to note. At times employers will dismiss you if you have knowledge in another area. It is basically a straw man argument - "they know a lot about quality control, but this job is sales" for example actually makes no sense as long as the applicant has the sales skills needed - but the employer is the one making the decision. Therefore, consider excluding or downplaying extra knowledge you have that is not clearly aligned with the role you want. It makes no sense, but that is the world we live in.

Above perspectives are very important, I would like to add ✌ important points as per my experience which can help one growing in mechanical engineer field as: 1) Work consistently, with full dedication and gain knowledge of all minute aspects of the mechanical field whichever industry one is working for at least 4-5 years of early carrier. Today's work culture is inclined more towards white collar jobs however for a mechanical engineer it's very essential to work on ground level. 2) Parallel Learning of best management practices and skills. The above combination of skills can give enough confidence and results in professional carrier to an individual.
