I greatly value audience data. Likewise, I constantly analyze performance metrics to see what our audience likes. This helps me shape the strategy to ensure our content truly connects with them. I concentrate on what works and tweak what doesn't. This approach keeps our content relevant and engaging. It's all about better understanding the audience's interactions with our content. Staying informed through these metrics also helps me predict future trends. This way, our content remains fresh and compelling. For me, data is more than just numbers; it provides context for the story we're building with our content.

When it comes to data, even Shakespeare would agree: "To analyze or not to analyze, that is the question." But let's face it, Hamlet probably would've made some different choices if he had Google Analytics!

I believe that people really matter. Brands themselves may not build as much trust as people can. Therefore, brands need to grow talents and invest in brand ambassadors who will collaborate not just once like influencers, but on a longer-term scale. This fosters deeper connections and sustained trust with the audience.

Technology is a driving force in content marketing. Stay abreast of the latest advancements in content creation and distribution tools. Leveraging technology is essential, but be selective. Choose tools that align with your specific goals. I once implemented a new AI tool for content personalization. It significantly increased engagement rates. However, not all technologies will suit your needs. Conduct thorough research and pilot tests before full-scale adoption. Stay updated through tech blogs and webinars. Encourage your team to experiment and share findings. This approach fosters a culture of innovation and ensures you're always using the best tools to stay ahead in content marketing. This is the way.

Embracing technology can help you create an edge. It's a double edged sword so it's crucial you know what tools you are using and how they benefit you / your business. When selecting a tool, think about how it will help you. Then think about the costs associated with using the technology (upfront subscription costs, cost for not using it etc) Once you have this information, you'll find that it's easier to make the decision about what tech you need and what you can pass off on.
Building a strong network within the content marketing community can provide invaluable insights and opportunities. Attend industry conferences, participate in webinars, and connect with peers on professional platforms. Sharing experiences and knowledge with fellow executives can lead to collaborative ventures and a deeper understanding of the industry's trajectory.

Networking is crucial. But focus on quality over quantity. Build meaningful relationships with industry leaders and influencers. I made a strategic effort to connect with a few key players at a major conference. These relationships have provided ongoing mentorship and collaboration opportunities. Join exclusive industry groups and forums where advanced strategies are discussed. Actively participate in discussions, offering value rather than just seeking it. This active engagement positions you as a thought leader and opens doors to unique opportunities and insights. Trust me.

Without networking, you operate in a silo. And silos are dangerous. Effective networking helps with building and maintaining a community; which in turn becomes a robust sounding board in times when you need expert advice, help with transitioning into a new job or finding a new one etc

Staying ahead means always learning. Sign up for advanced courses and certifications. I took a digital marketing course that completely changed my strategy game. Encourage your team to keep learning too. Make it a habit to have internal workshops and share knowledge. Keep that curiosity alive. Sometimes, ideas from other industries can spark something amazing in your field. Investing in your growth and your team's development keeps everyone sharp. It readies them to tackle new challenges.

Step outside your comfort zone/industry. If you're a B2B content marketer, pay attention to trends and best practices in B2C content marketing (and vice versa). If you're in hospitality, pay attention to what's happening, and what's working, in the energy industry. You never know where the next big idea or best practice will emerge, but if you stay laser-focused on your own narrow focus/market you may miss out on some key "a-ha moments."

Marketing is constantly evolving. If you stay in the same company with the same scope for long enough, your competences stagnate. In order to change that, you need external ways to get information in; about the new tools you haven't discovered, new trends you haven't heard about, AI models you haven't heard of, and practices you haven't thought of. There is no right way to do it (attend specialized marketing events, join a network, see what new recruits in your service are doing, etc), but as long as you do it you will stay ahead!
