I required cross-training for anyone interested in a role with more responsibility or title and for anyone who reached a time milestone, such as 6 months, a year, etc., even if they weren't interested in leadership. When serving staff understand the jobs of production staff and production staff understand the jobs of serving staff, their ability to work as a team rather than two distinct units increases. It helps with perspective, communication, understanding, gratitude, and quality control. This results in staff who feel valued, are more skilled, and can fill roles if vacancies arise.
