This approach forced me to learn how light behaves within that one parameter. Despite a temptation to make multiple changes, stick with it. The lessons are indelible. Trying to master simultaneous changes to lenses, f-stops, shutter speeds, ISO settings along with the lighting and arrangement etc. is daunting. Learn through sequential small bites. Work in one genre at first. The perspective, equipment, lighting and settings do not always crossover easily. With digital equipment there is zero risk to capture, capture, capture ... Incremental learning yields tremendous fruit.
