Here's how you can combat the stigma of temporary and contract work in AI.
In the ever-evolving field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), temporary and contract work has become increasingly common. However, there's a stigma associated with these types of employment that can affect professionals in the industry. The perception that permanent roles are more stable and prestigious often overshadows the benefits and opportunities that temporary and contract work can offer. It's time to shift the narrative and recognize the value that these positions bring to both individuals and the AI industry as a whole.
Temporary and contract work in AI allows you to embrace flexibility like never before. You have the power to choose projects that align with your interests and career goals, giving you a unique opportunity to diversify your experience. This kind of work can lead to a more dynamic resume, showcasing your adaptability and eagerness to take on new challenges. It's a chance to build a portfolio of successful projects that prove your capability across various domains within AI.

WOW! First of all, I AM one of the employers that need to be educated down below. Lol! Let me be clear - there's no "Stigma". The issue is the employer, not you. Most employers appreciate diverse and RELEVANT experience. So make sure you're charting your career along a targeted set of expertise, tools, etc. If you contract and then decide to try for full time employment, and the employer has issues with your background in RELEVANT contract work - that's their problem, not yours. It's also a red flag that you probably shouldn't work there. Embrace but USE the flexibility to build a targeted skill set. Be known for something and be the best at it.

Actually I disagree with the premise. Not specializing in one area of artificial intelligence can be of a disadvantage to you. You becomed half baked in many concepts and many subfields. The needed knowledge or skill that would convince employers that you are ready for the job is never found within you. Employers will never allow you into the core aspects of their model. Hoping it from one job to another gives people the notion that you are not qualified.

The truth is that in a dynamic context like AI, it is difficult to remain without a job. Indeed, today the number of freelancers is growing and temporary work should be considered as a real project to work on and grow. Simply this.

Actually I slightly disagree with the point given. The ability to form long and strong network stems a bit from permanent position in your place of work. Always being the new guy every month at a different organization is a no-no and a red flag. A sign of incompetence and untrustworthyness would follow. It always hard to trust the new guy because you may want to spark a conversation but you don't know her interest. What might send the wrong signals.

Taking the time to go into specifics of the potential project being discussed instead of some general theoretical educational attempt can make a difference. At the same time, you are proving the ability to grasp the objective and propose a potentially working solution. You facilitate learning by connecting AI aspects to the client's project and challenges. Words of caution: if your potential employer signals that didn't understand the nature of AI/ML projects (where success is not only dependent on your expertise—the input/training/testing data and a good collaboration for deploying a working model are equally important), it is best not to push and give the impression that your technical prowess might do the trick alone. It will backfire.
