There's a false statement being made in management consulting decks about how deploying AI can reduce your workforce by up to 30% due to the productivity & efficiency gains. I've been doing deployments since 2011 and NEVER have I seen a workforce reduction. WHY? Because when efficiency and productivity gains are achieved, the additional capacity created gets reassigned to the: 1) growing backlog of work that was ignored due to lack of capacity 2) growth verticals associated with new products & services. The time gets reallocated back to the organization but with valuable knowledge workers. As such, I advise unless we've actually done the work and have a few real-world deployments under our belt, its best to stay away from assumptions.

I hear this frequently. It's true. However, ask staff trying to be upskilled how much time was set aside for them without distractions to upskill? You'll find it's little to none. They are expected to do it on their own time, extra time, unpaid time, etc. As a leader, if you expect your team to upskill and begin leveraging the incredible power of AI then you need to make safe space for them to so. Additionally, you should provide them sufficient coaching talent to help them navigate the absolute deluge of information hitting them daily. At first, they need a good filter and guide. A good coach does that for team members.

Upskilling is great, but nothing trains you better than your 1st project. While Google, Harvard, MIT, and YouTube offers several free courses, hands on experience is still the #1 teacher. So my suggestion would be: 1) Take a few free courses to understand the basic premise of AI 2) Become familiar with a few off-the-shelf solutions and apply in personally in small areas 3) Broaden your scope to work 4) Then suggest a few improvement areas within your group, team, or division 5) Then start! I suggest setting aside time each week to do hands-on AI experimentation and also learn from many AI creators that are sharing their knowledge freely on social media. They are at the forefront of experimenting and creating.
