I couldn't agree more with the concept of career ladders. Creating a clearly articulated path to career advancement is a valuable conversation starter a leader can use with their team. Be mindful to articulate not just the "work to be done" across the ladder steps but also the specific behaviors one should demonstrate along the path. Some of the biggest misunderstandings I've seen in teams is when there is confusion about what behaviors are expected when we talk about executive presence, critical thinking or strategic thinking. Defining specific behaviors creates clarity between leader and team.
