You’re looking for a laptop that can handle professional gaming. What are the best options?
If you’re serious about gaming, you know that a laptop is not just a tool, but a weapon. You need a machine that can deliver high performance, stunning graphics, and immersive sound, without compromising on portability, battery life, or cooling. But how do you choose the best laptop for professional gaming? Here are some factors to consider and some options to explore.
The first thing to look for in a gaming laptop is the hardware. You want a powerful processor, a dedicated graphics card, a large and fast storage drive, and plenty of memory. These components will determine how smoothly your games run, how quickly they load, and how realistic they look. A good gaming laptop should have at least an Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 processor, a Nvidia GeForce RTX or AMD Radeon RX graphics card, a 1 TB SSD or HDD, and 16 GB of RAM.
-
Key specs such as a powerful CPU, high-end GPU, ample RAM, and fast SSD storage directly impact game load times, frame rates, and overall graphical fidelity, ensuring smooth, immersive gameplay even under demanding conditions. Additionally, features like a high-refresh-rate screen, robust cooling systems, and customizable RGB lighting enhance the gaming experience and personalization. Investing in the right specs and features means not just keeping pace with current game requirements but also future-proofing your gaming setup against upcoming titles. It's about ensuring that your gaming journey is as limitless as your ambition.

Basically all core features were already mentioned: CPU, GPU, RAM and Storage. Something to consider is also connectivity: Specs of the WLAN Adapter and/or LAN should be considered. Also make sure, that Storage and/or RAM is upgradeable or replaceable. Another point is the display: Personally I prefer a matte screen to a glossy one, and in a 15" formfactor I think that a native 1080p resolution is completely fine. This in turn lessens the load on the GPU. But if you are aiming for a bigger Laptop or plan to connect it to a larger display, you might want to opt for a stronger GPU.
-
When selecting a gaming laptop, prioritize robust hardware such as Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 processors, coupled with dedicated graphics cards like Nvidia GeForce RTX or AMD Radeon RX. Opt for ample storage, aiming for a 1 TB SSD or HDD, and ensure seamless performance with a minimum of 16 GB of RAM. These key components lay the foundation for an immersive gaming experience with smooth gameplay and realistic visuals.

Right now, custom PCs are making the wave in running dynamic gaming softwares, but I think the Alienware M18 13th Gen Core i9 is the laptop to have if you want to take your on-the-go gaming to the next level. it's a little pricey but worth it. It runs on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090, 64gbs of RAM, and a whopping 4 terabyte solid-state drive. This is one of the best out there and a fav for me.

The next thing to consider is the screen and the speakers. You want a display that can support high resolutions, refresh rates, and color accuracy, as well as a sound system that can produce clear and immersive audio. A good gaming laptop should have at least a 15.6-inch screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, a refresh rate of 120 Hz or higher, and a brightness of 300 nits or more. It should also have stereo speakers with a subwoofer or a Dolby Atmos sound technology.
-
Already gave some thought about the Display in topic #1. So nothing new here: 1080p, at least 60Hz (better go for 120+) but also consider the overall size and the usecase of connecting to an external screen. Regarding the sound: let's be honest, the laptop speakers will never be competitive to a real sound setup. Also a gaming laptop will make some noise under load, especially if compared to a tower/desktop. So depending on build and specs you might have a nice sound quality but it will be drowned in cooling noises. Opt for a good gaming headset instead, cable or bluetooth is up for you to decide.

The third thing to look for in a gaming laptop is the input devices. You want a keyboard that is comfortable, responsive, and customizable, as well as a touchpad that is accurate and smooth. A good gaming laptop should have a full-size keyboard with backlighting, anti-ghosting, and macro keys, as well as a touchpad that supports multi-touch gestures and has dedicated buttons.
-
Good and bright backlit keyboard is important, RBG and effects optional imho. When it comes to backlighting: make sure, that ALL key functions are actually lighting up! Several brands only have the letters/numbers lighting up, but signs and additional functions stay dark. This can be really annoying. Ofc the usability of the keys, like resistance, travelpath etc. should correspond with you. Personally I think Surfacebooks and Razer Blades have really great keyboards. Dell/Alienware were rather disappointing for me. Touchpad is rarely used when gaming, so always add a mouse and maybe a gamepad to your mobile gaming bag.
-
The fourth thing to consider is the appearance and the durability of the laptop. You want a laptop that is sleek, stylish, and sturdy, as well as lightweight, thin, and easy to carry. A good gaming laptop should have a metal or plastic chassis with a matte or glossy finish, a weight of less than 5 pounds, and a thickness of less than 1 inch.
-
I am a huge fan of the Unibody design, all metal casing. Makes the platform sturdy and also helps with heat dissipation. The overall size and weight are also defined by your individual usecase for mobile gaming: for me, mobile gaming is mostly a thing on long business trips and in the hotels. So I am not actively carrying it around with me. If aiming for gaming on the go, I would rather consider a handheld alternative like a Steam Deck. Basically you should always check for a reliable build quality. Gaming Laptops can be really pricy and you want them to last. Also check the hinges! The old Toshiba Satellites had a sad tendency to break there and wear out really fast.
-
Portabilität: Kompakte Bauweise, angemessenes Gewicht, ausreichende Akkulaufzeit. Diese Kriterien gewährleisten Langlebigkeit, Leistung und ein ansprechendes Äußeres.
The fifth thing to look for in a gaming laptop is the battery life and the cooling system. You want a laptop that can last for several hours on a single charge, as well as a laptop that can prevent overheating and noise. A good gaming laptop should have a battery life of at least 6 hours on normal use, and a cooling system that has multiple fans, heat pipes, and vents.
The last thing to consider is the cost and the service of the laptop. You want a laptop that is affordable, reliable, and supported by the manufacturer. A good gaming laptop should have a price range of $1000 to $2000, depending on the specs and features. It should also have a warranty of at least one year, and an option to extend it or buy additional coverage.
-
Different places have different pricing on the device you are seeking. Looking for something that is sustainable in terms of long-term usage is something I usually go for. Do not overspend your budget allocated, and make sure it is within your expectation of usage and perhaps consider 1-2 years of future proofing it. Do read up on the components' information as some of them have different warranty, but that is rare. Lastly, taking care of your device is a form of investing in the future. If your device is not faulty, you won't need to spend effort to repairing it, which will take up time and money.
-
When it comes to gaming laptops or PCs, I'm a fan of local, dedicated manufacturers. I'm not going to make a cryptic claim here, but several Polish companies make really great machines at reasonable prices.
-
When it comes to mobile gaming there are also some interesting alternatives, depending on your usecase: if you are more into indy games, that rarely require top notch GPU, you can run a lot on great second hand laptops with good CPUs. I personally have a small Linux laptop, and it is great for titles like Hollow Knight and the like. Also, if solid bandwidth and low latency is given: maybe consider cloud based service (like Shadow.tech instances). This allows to put the actual gameload into the cloud: your laptop doesn't need high end specs, it will run really quiet and the battery will last very long. When playing at a friend's place, I always use my cloud instance, since good connectivity is given.

As someone who didn't have a lot of money to spend on both a gaming and work PC, don't be afraid to go for the pre-built laptops! I personally use an MSI brand computer that I got on sale for Black Friday. So far, it is capable of running Unity, Unreal, and my other personal games with ease! It's perfect for having fun and enabling my work to be portable both in and outside of the classroom. Hope this helps!
