While Instagram is owned by Facebook and shares its advertising system, the platform offers unique insights for A/B testing specifically tailored to its user base. Instagram's visual-centric format means that A/B tests often focus on imagery and video content. The insights gained from these tests can help you craft ads that are more likely to catch the eye of scrolling users and lead to higher engagement rates.

A/B testing on Instagram offers a robust framework for advertisers to identify the most effective content format—be it reels, carousels, or stories—by analysing user engagement and conversion metrics. The following structure is a good way to get started: 1. Define objective: Ensure your objective is the same for what you’re testing, so you can get a good reading of the cost per results. 2. Test design: Compare between reels, stories and carousels. See which performs better. Most importantly aim to keep your content the same across the three creatives. 3. Audience, Duration and Budget: Keep them all the same across the three formats. This allows you to eliminate variations during your test.

Sadly, most social media is mass media in disguise. You do not know who sees your ad. Thus, while you may set up an A/B split, you only vaguely control your test universe. Thus the BEST medium, where A/B split originated is direct mail. You know who you mail, you know it gets delivered, to a decision maker - who makes a decision... either buy, keep or discard. This high engagement level is why MAIL is the only medium that also gives you the engaged non-buyer list. A requirement for machine-learning AI modeling.

Permission-based email marketing applications (there are many) offer good options for A/B testing, with the development of landing pages and proper use of analytics. I don't believe it's foolproof, and it's better to listen over time, develop patterns over time, and compare/contrast with an overall average when testing. No need to rush and have the answers before the data is real. We use Mail Chimp. I've been with teams that have developed custom approaches - although it all comes down to conversion based optimization regardless of the platform.

Although Meta ads, Twitter Ads, and LinkedIn ads offer the best A/B testing features, many permission-based email marketing apps like Mailchimp and Apollo also provide the best A/B testing for conversion-based optimization. The point is to get more conversions on whatever platform you use. Platforms like AdRoll and Unbounce can also integrated with social media advertising platforms for advanced A/B testing functionalities!

Even if it is not a “social media platform”, newsletter tools most often also offer a solution for a/b testing, that could offer insights - which can eventually be used to adapt the overall approach for a certain target group (image to text ratio, words per phrase, tonality, etc.) Also, I’d love to hear from other marketers, if someone actively uses WhatsApp / telegram / etc. newsletter options and if so, are there any a/b testing methods available?

It’s vital to consider the maturity of the platform you plan to use for ads. Facebook ads manager has been around longest, so it’s going to have the most advanced features and offer the largest audience from which to segment. Additionally, if you’re hoping to truly a/b test your ads, consider running them on multiple platforms and make that the a/b format.
