In my experience, aside from the critical outputs from participatory methods and tools for community development, the process itself is also extremely educational for everyone. Having participated in community development workshops and discussions in different communities around Guatemala and El Salvador, I was priviledged to have witnessed (and experienced) all the learning that happens during these sessions. That is one of the reasons why community empowerment happens and why a sense of ownership is ingrained in people. Not everyone has the same levels of education or access to information. Thus, people learn a lot through these sessions by sharing information and experiences. Learning from each other is enlightening and powerful.

Last year during a project I participated in, our organization made is mandatory that we the programs team ensure we include the participation of the community members. With this, the project was easier and faster to carryout. The community members no longer waited to be served, they began to ask questions on how they can help out during our project because we made them realize how beneficial the project will be to them. When you participatory method tool is used in community development, new ideas which may be better than the one on ground may be birthed, the community members will have sense of being a part of something positive/big and this will also foster unity and peace

It is not unusual that government officials, specialists and community leadership get to see citizen participation in public affairs as beneficial on itself - mainly for promoting civic education and giving legitimacy to political decisions. But this "end on itself" approach may blind government officials to the necessity of effectivelly addressing the public demands acknowledged via participation processes. If participation be perceived as having little to no concrete influence in relevant policy decisions, or as not conducing to observable positive policy results, participants may get frustraded and stop giving it any other importance than an yet another venue for individual or group selfish political competition.

In participatory method, one must try to bring a balance. At times, the stakeholders and government may be insistent on what they believe should be way things are to be run based on their expert knowledge and experience, but their will be a way to also carry the community members along and also show to them that their contributions and ideas matter and are appreciated. In this method, the moment on party feels left out, they gradually pull out of the whole process, and that is why it is important at all times to communicate effectively with everyone. It doesn't mean that everyone's idea will be put to work, but good and open communication will go a long way to ensure there are no biases

A lot of the articles are helpful, but community development will not achieve its full potential to become empowered into having accurate say in their community and be given that say by the authorities. I have experience of local and national government giving little or no voice to community representatives on important decisions. I find this to be especially the case in working-class areas and council estates. This approach has led to more trouble than had the community been consulted in the first place.

Ireland's Citizens Assembly system of Deliberative and Participatory Democracy along with Direct Democracy has proven to be successful on contentious social issues and Irish people have confirmed to be a well educated and well informed public, maybe we should use it more and it may be a better model than our current dysfunctional system of distributed responsibility and zero accountability, overreaching centralised government and so-called representative democracy, sometimes more interested in corporations and business needs than people's needs and wishes.
Participatory methods and tools can be used in community development to great effect. To illustrate, a PRA project in Nepal helped a rural community to identify and address water and sanitation issues by involving them in mapping, ranking, scoring, and action planning. This led to improved access to safe water and sanitation facilities, as well as increased awareness and behavior change among the community members. In Kenya, an ABCD project supported a slum community to mobilize their assets and resources to improve their livelihoods and well-being. This enabled the community to create and run various income-generating and social activities. In Brazil, an AI project engaged a low-income community to discover and amplify their positive aspects and aspirations, which then became the basis for envisioning and creating a better future. This collaborative process of change resulted in the development of initiatives such as a community radio, a cultural center, and a recycling cooperative.
