What are the key drivers of success in agribusiness?
Agribusiness is the sector that encompasses the production, processing, distribution, and marketing of food and other agricultural products. It is a dynamic and competitive industry that requires constant innovation, adaptation, and efficiency to succeed. In this article, we will explore some of the key drivers of success in agribusiness and how you can leverage them to grow your business.
One of the most important drivers of success in agribusiness is market orientation, which means understanding the needs, preferences, and expectations of your customers and delivering value to them. Market orientation involves conducting market research, segmenting your target market, developing a unique value proposition, and communicating effectively with your customers. By being market-oriented, you can create a loyal customer base, differentiate yourself from competitors, and increase your profitability.

We recognized that there is a global opportunity for Canadian Whisky. Canadian distillers can carve out valuable niches within the categories of Single Malt, rye whisky and even whiskies that have mash bills inspired by bourbon whiskies. We've made some important changes within our company and we're trying to steer some change within the barley value chain. We recognized that traditional "distillers" malts don't match the needs of Canadian whisky producers. To help fill this gap, we've tailored our grain selection and production methods. This aligns with our purpose of making more products possible out of only Canadian ingredients. We've also advocated for the breeding of new barley varieties with specific attributes to benefit distillers.

Another key driver of success in agribusiness is technology adoption, which means using the latest tools, techniques, and systems to improve your productivity, quality, and sustainability. Technology adoption involves investing in research and development, adopting best practices, and embracing digital transformation. By adopting technology, you can reduce your costs, enhance your efficiency, and improve your environmental and social impact.

Technology can definightly be a key driver of success. Imagine a FPO manager sitting at a agri input retail outlet. 1st scenario - A farmers comes , asks for a pack of seed, pays the amount and goes back without any interaction (As the staff does not know the farmer in person). 2nd scenario - The manager by asking the mobile no or farmer I'd or aadhar details and gets a track of transactions of that farmers since last 2-3 years. That will help him/her engage with the farmer on his experience of.last transactions. If new farmers, they can be referred to other farmers in their locality who are part of the FPO. Imagine the difference. The manager has either serviced a repeat customer or just created a repeat customer only bcz of the engagement

Our small malt house (Red Shed Malting) and family farm (Hamill Farms Ltd.) were involved in the first beer in North America that traced the ingredients from field to can using Blockchain technology. It was a neat project to be a part of and it helped us tell our story and provide unprecedented transparency to consumers. I think the real value in it was providing an easy-to-understand, tangible example to consumers of how the technology works and the benefits, this helps to build trust. We're taking advantage of the fact that consumers will read the back of a can of beer and generally trust the whole supply chain behind the product. This paves the path for other food products to gain the trust of consumers using Blockchain traced products.

A third key driver of success in agribusiness is supply chain management, which means coordinating and integrating the activities and processes involved in sourcing, processing, distributing, and delivering your products. Supply chain management involves optimizing your inventory, logistics, transportation, and distribution channels, as well as collaborating with your suppliers, processors, retailers, and customers. By managing your supply chain, you can increase your responsiveness, reliability, and flexibility, and reduce your risks and wastage.

Traceability transforms supply (value) chain. Agri products with good sourcing info can benefit from lucrative markets. Efficiency at each stage in the chain ensures profitability. Logistics (storage, cold chain, transport, customs..) need to work together to support a thriving agribusiness. Long way (but a must to do) for Africa to make investments in this direction.
A fourth key driver of success in agribusiness is human capital development, which means developing and retaining the skills, knowledge, and abilities of your employees and stakeholders. Human capital development involves providing training, education, mentoring, and incentives to your staff, as well as engaging with your farmers, contractors, and partners. By developing your human capital, you can improve your performance, innovation, and competitiveness, and create a positive work culture.

Agriculture is a people busienss and Agribusiness is no different. Marketing, tech adoption, planning and compliace are all necessary, however none more necessary than 'Human Capital Development'. With an ageing Ag population IP is leaving with staff. The fabris that knits our business together is the ability to train, atteract and develop staff. Key decision makers need to be informed, confident and skilled at making decision, in a changing economic and climatic environment.

A fifth key driver of success in agribusiness is regulatory compliance, which means following the rules, standards, and guidelines set by the government and other authorities that affect your industry. Regulatory compliance involves understanding and adhering to the laws and regulations related to food safety, quality, labeling, traceability, environmental protection, animal welfare, and social responsibility. By complying with regulations, you can avoid fines, penalties, and reputational damage, and enhance your trustworthiness and credibility.
A sixth key driver of success in agribusiness is strategic planning, which means setting and pursuing your long-term goals, vision, and mission. Strategic planning involves conducting a SWOT analysis, identifying your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, and developing a strategy that aligns with your objectives, values, and resources. By planning strategically, you can focus on your core competencies, leverage your competitive advantages, and anticipate and respond to changes in the market and environment.

I tend to find it discomforting that all the six points are exact replica of any business and nothing specific being discussed from Agribusiness per se.. the most important thing one has to understand in agribusiness is that you are working in an environment where stark contrasting objectives are to be met by the state I.e. higher farm income and at the same time affordable food price. A successful agribusiness is a supply driven game where only a controlled supply can help you sustained for longer period.

Scalable, sustainable solutions. Every solution should be made considering the wide range of crops and agro climatic conditions. Develop the products as solutions that can deliver even in worst case scenarios. Being related to agriculture and ultimately to food, all solutions should have a positive impact on the ecology in some way or the other.

The six points mentioned are all from a management point of view and could be used for any business. If we talk about Agri business, then the first aspect is to look at the natural resources needed : soil, temperature, light and water, or required feedstock for animal husbandry. These have to be suitable for the business and at the right distance to the target market.

A seventh key driver of agribusiness is Innovation. Agribusiness is a highly competitive and constantly evolving sector that relies on innovation and value addition to stay ahead. To improve the efficiency, quality, and sustainability of agricultural production and processing, it is essential to adopt new technologies, practices, products, or business models. By doing so, we can create new market opportunities that cater to the changing needs and preferences of consumers. Areas such as biotechnology, precision agriculture, digital agriculture, and value-added processing can contribute significantly to innovation and help increase the performance and profitability of agribusiness.

Volatility is inherent nature of Agribusiness. Ownership splitting & reward for efforts at every leg of value chain has seen building concept to reality business cases in recent time. By acknowledging quality output, be at farmgate, at stakeholders or at distribution side, it has very positive conversion towards satisfaction at all the levels. Ultimately satisfied partners deliver smiles to miles and make concept to reality conversion very much faster & sustainable. Value addition to the Grey area by identifying best fit solution for it, could be the only probable match to deal problems in Agri space and leverage. So by defining ownership, focus on quality, value addition at desired place will definitely help to manage it to better extent.
