This is one of my favorite subjects. In fact, I was just speaking to some of our leadership about this very same subject. It is my deep-seeded belief that the most loving thing a leader can do is to lead people to their capacity. Success thrives in the capacity zone. Most people are naturally inclined to work towards comfort (the comfort zone--the zone that is safe and familiar). A good leader lives in a constant state of taking inventory of peoples untapped potential. After the talent assessment, the effective leader trains and demonstrates behaviors that propel others into the capacity zone. The most important part: KEEP performing the inventory assessment because capacity stretches as you continue to develop others.

One of the most underrated tools to help develop untapped potential is the weekly 1:1. I have had weekly 1:1s with all of my direct reports in every role I’ve been in. This provides a space for (1) real-time feedback, (2) a dedicated space for questions, (3) time for work review, and (4) helps to foster your relationships with your team. Talent development tools and plans are great, but I’ve found regular feedback and support work even better!

This Is Not A What if - This is a Always Has As a leader you can't assume that you have reached the pinnacle of potential. Because then there is only one way to go - down! You Must always think that your team has more to offer, more to contribute, that is how you develop people and make them do extraordinary things. The strategic challenge is not only to work with people and push them and make them aware, the bigger challenge is to become a leader that can keep uncovering potential. It has nothing to do with other people but everything to do with what lies between your ears.
