I don’t know how you can improve without asking someone. And when I say ask is to talk to them. Call or in person, never e-mail. They are horrible for genuine feedback. Be brave, be bold, and call the person you want feedback from. Just call the agency and ask to talk to the person. That worked for me. It will work for you.

Trust that what you give will come back to you in many ways. It's a chain of favors. And don't forget to always be kind and answer any question or request, even if you cannot fulfill it, a refusal also helps with new possibilities. Don't take anything for granted!

Networking is getting out of your comfort zone. Go to events and talk with people. The best way is to start small, in niche events. Meetups are great for this. Just introduce yourself and make honest, real questions. After that, ask for feedback or recommendations on what to do in fields that you don't feel comfortable with. Or if you are an expert, just go to these events and offer honest, candid feedback. Time and practice will help you to create your style and to find some ice breakers to start conversations.

Give to Get Asking for something for nothing will not take you far. Yet, this is what most people do when they reach out to others in a position to help them. Traditional one-way networking is dead. No one has the energy anymore to give their time to everyone who asks. Yep, networking is dead. Long live networking! Instead of emphasizing asking, focus on sharing. It may seem more transactional and quid pro quo but you need to give to get. Find out people’s interests and send them an article, a quote, a thought, an offer to help- anything that shows that you understand them and are as interested in them as you want them to be in you. Most people are givers, so they don’t like takers. So start giving!

Consistency is key. Writing, reviewing, and reassessing your short and long-term goals must be completed consistently. If you spend all of your time in your business, you won't have enough time to spend on your business, planning, strategizing, and executing. Back to time blocking. It, honestly, took me many years to get this point through my skull but when you put it on your calendar and create a space where you won't be interrupted by notifications or people stopping by your office - you'll find a rhythm to reflecting. Mine is about 6 days a week when I'm biking or walking in the woods. It used to be very early in the morning when I would get to the office at 5am. Find your time, create space, and reflect!

I think sometimes we forget the FUN of advertising and marketing, and one of the ways I have traditionally gotten my work to feel more meaningful and thus translate my passion to my higher-ups is through revisiting our "why" as an organization/content creator and using that to fuel the fun of marketing. Remember that going forward doesn't mean learning and doing new things every day. Staying positive is looking at a full perspective and not at the small things. Here is a great analogy: the book "Hyperfocus" states that we have something called "Scatter Focus" where our mind wanders. During these times our brain, in its subconscious does something that is Connecting Dots between different things. Perhaps in a couple of months you'll be walking and your brain will connect two different things, that will sound genious. That's Connecting Dots. That's when you should remind yourself to always stay positive. Learning is a marathon, not a sprint.

The more you learn...and learn where to learn it...the better your foundational skills will be. And then your career will go ANYWHERE you want it to go.

Build your dream team (or join it!). My former manager at Google gave me a precious advice, quoting Jim Collin's Good-to-Great principles: "Get the right people in the bus"! The more you advance in your career, the more likely your scope will expand. We can not be expert of everything but we can build a diverse team of talents to cover the spectrum of skills that are needed to be successfull. Everyday I am grateful to my team for the successes, the challenges and the fun we get together!

Make yourself available. It is difficult to convince someone else about your skills if you don't believe in them enough to use them on yourself. One last thing: leave the false humility at the door. It will only hurt your future prospects.
