In combination with eDNA analysis of water and soil samples, this can give quick baseline information of key species on a project site. Salesforce has launched a Nature Tech Alliance (with ERM, NatureMetrics and Planet Labs) to support companies that are entering the biodiversity space and need baselines for their nature strategies. We also invest in companies like Sylvera that use AI to analyze forest projects. Bringing down costs and increasing quality of monitoring biodiversity will see further advances in coming months and years.

A lot of methods used for measuring climate conditions, species distribution, and ecosystem health have significant error bars. In case of a method that has a error bar that is larger then the expected change from baseline, everything is possible: improvement, no-change, worsening. This is for instance true for measuring SOC. So it its necessary to report the propagated error of each method or model used to allow judgement of the results.

Do not start by assuming you WILL observe an impact and that the cause is climate change. This is not the way to apply science. First monitor whether there is a change in conditions using historical and new data. Then, if you observe change, assess whether the impacts are postive, negative or neutral. Aim to understand the cause of impacts. Is it within or outside natural variability. If outside, what could be the causes? If human driven, the cause could be: landuse changes, pollution, water overabstraction, climate change, or something else. Climate change is not automatically the main cause of impacts. By just assuming any impacts are due to climate change you may miss an opportunity to more directly fix any problems.

Upon having baseline data, observe the various stress indicators made available and respond before things become exponentially difficult to revitalize. It begins as a whisper before it becomes loud - this is due to biodiversity. Keystone species and the abundance of supporting species work together - you MUST see an ecosystem as one living being, a holistic system of interactions, compartmentalized purposefully. As one layer is stressed, other layers compensate. Over time, layers upon layers synergistically wear down, so also will be the indicators of such a trend.
