The first step to improve your product development process is to understand your customers and their problems, needs, preferences, and expectations. You can use various methods to gather customer insights, such as interviews, surveys, focus groups, observation, feedback, and data analysis. You should also segment your customers into different groups based on their characteristics, behaviors, and goals. This will help you identify your target market and create products that solve their specific pain points and deliver value.

Market research is key. I know companies are now resorting to in-house research projects but it is also good to, from time to time, engage external consultants to do independent research in order to deal with potential biases.

The next step is to define your goals and scope for your product development project. You should have a clear vision of what you want to achieve, why, and how. You should also set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) objectives that align with your business strategy and customer needs. Additionally, you should define the scope of your product, which includes the features, functions, benefits, and requirements that you want to deliver. You should also prioritize your scope based on the value and feasibility of each element.
The third step is to follow a structured process for your product development project. You should use a framework or methodology that guides you through the different stages of creating and launching your product, such as ideation, prototyping, testing, validation, development, and launch. You should also use tools and techniques that help you organize, communicate, and collaborate with your team and stakeholders, such as project management software, agile methods, design thinking, and lean startup principles.
The fourth step is to test and validate your assumptions and hypotheses about your product and your customers. You should not rely on your intuition or opinions, but rather on evidence and data. You should use various methods to test and validate your product ideas, such as experiments, minimum viable products (MVPs), user testing, beta testing, and analytics. You should also collect and analyze feedback from your customers and users, and use it to improve your product and make informed decisions.
The fifth step is to iterate and improve your product based on the results of your testing and validation. You should not settle for the first version of your product, but rather seek to enhance it and make it better. You should use a cycle of build-measure-learn to continuously learn from your customers and users, and make changes and improvements to your product accordingly. You should also monitor and measure your product performance and impact, and use metrics and indicators that reflect your goals and value proposition.
The final step is to learn from your successes and failures in your product development process. You should not view failure as a negative outcome, but rather as an opportunity to learn and grow. You should identify and analyze the factors that contributed to your success or failure, and use them to improve your process and product. You should also celebrate and reward your achievements and milestones, and share your learnings and best practices with your team and organization.

Unlike most academic answers to improving a business's product development process, here is a practical way that will prove helpful. Take a look at your results from the last 2-3 years and compare them to other companies in similar businesses. If your results are not as strong, take time to visit and talk about the product development process at those other firms. What is different/what is similar? By doing this review with several companies, you will be able to develop a list of best practices that these other firms do. Identify which ones you can adopt to your process to help improve your results. While these may seem like small steps, they can return big results.
