After my Ph.D. in Electrical Engg, I was teaching for about 13 years till the age of 40. Then I joined a startup and have been in 5 startups since then, all of them at least moderately successful. When you are teaching you know the fundamentals much better than anybody in industry. Aim is to leverage this. If you have been doing research in some area, see if you join a company (or startup) working in this area. In my case, I was working on and teaching circuit simulation. At its basics, circuit simulation is just Kirchoff's laws which people forget after a few years. In short, as you know fundamentals much better you can leverage this in industry.

Having a strong academic background is certainly beneficial in starting a career, but it's more like a gate pass. To continue and progress further, what matters is having a perspective and understanding it. When you are an academic researcher, your focus and goals are very distinct from when you have a non-academic career. Speaking from my own experience, pursuing a PhD helped me develop problem-solving skills and taught me how to analyze problems rather than just solve them. This training was geared towards understanding the bigger picture and later on, helped me to develop a framework that I use continually. Then being a lifelong student helps in continuous learning.
