Trauma is what happens when we are too alone in a challenging situation and the amygdalae try to prevent a similar situation from happening again. This recent failure experience might have prompted a trauma response, it might remind you of a past trauma, or both. Either way, because trauma occurs in relationship, healing must also occur in relationship. Ideally, this relationship is with a trusted person who can hold space and listen well to what happened to us. But if you don't have a trusted support person, you can also access self-compassion by imagining turning toward the struggling part of yourself with warmth and kindness and listening to what it wants to tell you.
Finally, take time to reflect on the experience and adjust your approach accordingly. Consider what strategies worked, which didn't, and how you can apply this knowledge moving forward. Reflection fosters a proactive attitude towards failure, turning it into a stepping stone rather than a stumbling block. With each reflection, you'll find it easier to set realistic expectations and be kinder to yourself when things don't go as planned.
