By not being pigeonholed is a key. Don’t become known as a one trick pony. Always approach each commission with a fresh eye , a keen determination to surprise and delight the client. Push your own and there boundaries- my own story of this is being asked to shoot a customised Ducati in black. “ white background only , just lots of detail “ was the brief. I shot it as asked, but then shot it on black , using a moving light technique, and gels. The client was stunned with this , not what they expected, but guess which one they used? It is also essential to make time for yourself, find a pastime that you can lose yourself in. Mines Badminton, just hit that shuttle !

Setting boundaries isn't enough: you must also be ready to enforce them. The grind of capitalism is real, and as gig workers we run the risk of feeling beholden to clients. But not all money is good money, and not every client needs to be YOUR client. If someone gives you the ick or doesn't respect your boundaries, break up with them as a client! Avoid falling into the trap of being 'always on'. Social media is not your friend. Maintain your own website, email list, and contacts.

It's hard not to think about your passion, I often think about the things I haven't been able to do during the day and I imagine all the great things I'll be able to do after a good night's sleep, but it keeps me from falling asleep! There are many amateur photographers and I try to avoid using a camera unless I am paid to do so. My hobbies include interior decorating, cycling and gardening. I find that photography takes a lot of concentration and I need to do something physical to relax.
