Here's how you can ignite creativity and innovation in your team.
In the dynamic world of commercial interior design, creativity and innovation are not just buzzwords; they're the lifeblood of your team's success. As you navigate client demands and aesthetic challenges, fostering an environment where new ideas flourish is critical. It's about more than just drawing up plans; it's about building a culture that encourages risk-taking, nurtures talent, and breaks the mold. Whether you're leading a project for a sleek new office space or a cozy boutique hotel, the ability to ignite creativity and innovation within your team can set you apart in a competitive industry.
Empowerment is a cornerstone of creative thinking. As a leader in commercial interior design, encourage your team to speak up and share their ideas, no matter how unconventional they may seem. Create an atmosphere where all suggestions are valued and considered. This inclusiveness not only boosts morale but can also lead to unexpected and innovative design solutions that might have otherwise been overlooked. Remember, the quietest voice in the room might be harboring the most revolutionary concept.

They say be the dumbest person in the room, and there is plenty of merit to that statement. If you use your 2 ears to listen, your 1 mouth to speak and your 2 eyes to look, you will find that those around you have plenty of amazing ideas, which you would possibly never have some up with yourselves. Allowing others to have a voice opens up another world potentially, especially in a world where we all have such different experiences and ways of viewing things. Other than the obvious benefits to the creative process, this allows others to feel valued it creates feelings of belonging and investment, as people get invested in what they feel involved with. It also invokes confidence that their opinions and ideas are valid and valued.

Encourage all team members to share their ideas and perspectives. Create a safe and inclusive environment where everyone feels their voice matters. Regular brainstorming sessions and open forums can facilitate this.

> Foster an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing ideas, even if they seem outlandish. > Encourage open discussion and avoid punishing mistakes made during brainstorming. > Break routine! Host brainstorming sessions outside the office, encourage diverse perspectives through guest speakers, and provide time for employees to explore creative pursuits. > Celebrate innovative ideas, even if they don't lead to final solutions. > Public recognition and incentives for creative problem-solving will motivate teams to keep thinking outside the box.

Be mindful of psychological safety! Creativity flourishes when team members feel comfortable sharing ideas, no matter how out of the box. Additionally, a more diverse range of ideas results from varying origins and viewpoints, so diversify the team by hiring people from diverse backgrounds
Diversity is the spice of life and the spark of innovation. By assembling a team with varied backgrounds and specialties, you're setting the stage for a kaleidoscope of ideas. In commercial interior design, this could mean mixing veterans with fresh graduates or architects with graphic designers. Each person brings a unique set of skills and perspectives that, when combined, can lead to groundbreaking design concepts that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Diversity is key to creativity. Bring together people from different backgrounds, disciplines, and experiences. This mix of perspectives can lead to more innovative solutions and out-of-the-box thinking.

Although many people have many different approaches to one problem, allowing the space and prompts for those insights to come out, is a task to be cultivated. Try encouraging more collaborative platforms such as Miro and Figma that allow for everyone's ideas to reflect off of each other. Use the iterative-running process to catapult ideas into a rich space.

I agree. Having different perspectives and utilising them positively is like combining different colors to create a beautiful artwork. When people with different experiences and skills work together, they can come up with innovative solutions. This is because everyone brings their own unique ideas and ways of thinking.
Comfort zones are creativity's kryptonite. To ignite innovation, you must encourage your team to challenge the status quo and explore uncharted territories in design. This might involve experimenting with new materials, embracing technology, or reimagining traditional spaces. The goal is to push boundaries and stimulate out-of-the-box thinking, which is essential for staying ahead in the fast-paced world of commercial interior design.

One thing I find helpful is always ask my designers; questions to challenge their thought process and if their design is robust enough for daily public use

The key to operating outside of your comfort zone is confidence. Developing that starts with the attitude that every decision you make is an expression of some want of yours. Lean into trusting your voice, eye, taste, and hand instead of constantly questioning. If you have a doubt about a decision, just press onwards and see if contextually it fits or needs to be adjusted. If you have trouble with self-criticism, remember that the only standard that matters to you is you own. The further you allow your authentic decisions to take hold over the course of a few sessions, eventually you will always be led somewhere unique.
The right tools can transform an idea into a masterpiece. Ensure your team has access to the latest design software, trend reports, and material samples. These resources are invaluable for exploring creative possibilities and bringing ideas to life. In commercial interior design, having a well-equipped toolbox can make all the difference in developing innovative solutions that resonate with clients and their spaces.

Although you might be a pro at your program of choice, a physical scale model lends less of a degree of separation between your mental-spatial faculty and your intent & process, making a clearer bandwidth connection between the material and the assertion of your creative eye. Our hands are our tools of power, it is better to clothe them into direct form, rather than mouse -> program -> form. Research the old masters and how they utilized objects to give a better sense. Such as Gaudí's Models.
Play isn't just for kids; it's a powerful catalyst for adult creativity too. Incorporating play into the workplace can help your team relax and open their minds to new ideas. This could be as simple as dedicating time for brainstorming sessions that feel more like games than work. In the context of commercial interior design, play might involve building models, sketching freehand, or even visiting inspiring spaces to fuel creativity.

Foster a playful environment where creativity can flourish. Allow time for fun activities and experiments that can inspire new ideas. Sometimes the best innovations come from a place of play and exploration.

Play is simply creating without a clear cut destination. If this type of experimentation is foreign to you, try today, turning on your favorite playlist, and just fiddle with your program or materials without any care for the review of the final product. Run through the transformations you are familiar with, this will give your subconscious footing to conspire a semblance of route to follow. Let each decision inform the next one. To take it a step further, engage a measure of constraint such as a boundary, a limit of material, an environment, a feeling, a budget, etc. Allow for a set of blocks to be in the break room and a mat. Designate play-spaces and set up a camera. Make it easy to pick up and valuable to use.

Reflection is a critical component of the creative process. Encourage your team to regularly step back and evaluate their work. What can be improved? What lessons have been learned? This not only helps refine ideas but also fosters a culture of continuous learning and improvement. In commercial interior design, where trends and client needs are always evolving, being reflective is key to staying innovative and delivering exceptional designs.

I enjoy reflecting proactively. Such as, • Placing it where it will live to enable the next step of edits, usually seeing something you forgot to incorporate. • Creating a new mind-map & mood-board to see what the current piece is giving, and then you can compare it to the original mind-board/mood-map to see your trajectory. • Employ Provocation Techniques such as "What if the final piece of this was just a 15s Tik Tok?" or "What would be the worst possible interpretation of this look like". • Try a SILENT Braindrain where everyone writes their ideas whilst doing something else such as a walk, fiddling on the program, an instrument, etc. • Roleplay as an VC investor or stakeholder. • Tear it all down and collage it back together. <3

I believe introspection fosters collaboration; its absence as a cultural norm within the team or as a personal habit can impede progress, especially when compounded by the challenge of unskilled owners inheriting the company as a legacy and may sometimes prioritize speed over quality for more gains without allowing teams to reflect on their decisions. Understanding team dynamics and communication styles is crucial for enhancing teamwork and productivity. In creative fields like commercial Interior Design or Production Engineering, introspection drives team synergy, fostering innovation. Encouraging reflection on contributions nurtures a cohesive, innovative environment, leading to exceptional designs and team unity.

Outra chave para a criatividade é ir além dos limites conhecidos! Uma opção é o trabalho com as perguntas: "E Se ..?". Desafie a equipe a pensar além do óbvio.
