Staff frequently like to give you back the responsibilities that you have delegated to them; by dumping the challenges they encounter back on your desk. I combat this using a simple tool... I print index card size pieces of paper with these 4 questions on them: What is the cause(s) of the issue/problem/challenge? What are some possible solutions? What is the best possible solution? What do you recommend? When someone tries to dump a problem back on my desk, when they have clearly been given responsibility for something, I give them this slip of paper and tell them to come back to me when they have written out the answers. I am always happy to help, but need them to do the heavy lifting. Usually takes 2 or 3 times, then they get it!
