Here's how you can demonstrate your expertise with animation software in an interview.
Landing an interview for an animation role can feel like a big win, but it's just the beginning. To truly impress, you need to demonstrate your proficiency with animation software. This is your chance to showcase not only your technical skills but also your creativity and problem-solving abilities. Whether you're a seasoned animator or just breaking into the industry, understanding how to effectively present your animation software expertise can set you apart from the competition. Remember, it's not just about what you can do; it's about how you communicate your skills to potential employers.
Your portfolio is the cornerstone of your interview. It should be a curated collection of your best work, highlighting your skills with various animation software. Include diverse projects that showcase your range—from 2D vector-based animations to 3D modeling and motion graphics. Explain the process behind your creations, emphasizing how you utilized software features to bring concepts to life. This will give interviewers insight into your technical prowess and artistic vision. Make sure your portfolio is accessible and well-organized, so you can smoothly navigate through it during the interview.

When building your portfolio show your work to someone your trust, like a professional in your field or a professor, and ask which piece you should remove. Include ONLY your best work. Quality over quantity. Build a portfolio of the work YOU WANT TO DO. If this is your first portfolio or if you are moving into a new field, create case studies that mimic the industry you want to work in. Research the company you are applying to, take note of the software used to create the majority of their work. Make sure the first image in your portfolio is your strongest piece and created with software noted above. Include your contact information on the first page, make it easy for recruiters to get a sense of who you are and how to reach you.

"showcase your range—from 2D vector-based animations to 3D modeling and motion graphics." I have a disagreement with this idea. This is good if you are applying for a 3D Generalist. (3D Generalist positions are rare and also the companies that want Generalists are generally small and can offer only a limited salary. Industry needs specialists.) But if you are aiming for an Animator role please focus on the contents and include only the best works done in Animation.

Each project has a moment where everything clicked, where you used a tool in a surprising way. Zero in on those! Did you find a clever workaround in the software? Did a feature spark a whole new style? Those nuggets tell more about your potential than a hundred polished pieces.

It is crucial to be able to speak not only to the fundamentals of animation, like the twelve principles but also to have a more profound knowledge of how curves and easing can add a secondary dimension to animation, with the software working as your assistant rather than your master of how the animation will be influenced. How could you get secondary motion without having to keyframe every item on a character? How can you show weight and emotion with purposeful movement and integrate an ease-out that captures the same feel without the added keyframes? Demonstrate mastery of your tools and your understanding of time and purpose.
Understanding the ins and outs of animation software is crucial. Be prepared to discuss your proficiency with key tools and techniques within the software. This could include rigging characters, applying textures, or simulating lighting effects. Speaking confidently about these elements shows that you're not just familiar with the software, but that you can leverage its capabilities to create compelling animations. If you can, relate these skills to specific projects in your portfolio, providing a clear link between your knowledge and your work.

Getting asked about software in interviews is normal, so it's great to know it well. When I answered, I talked about how I did things and what tools I used in the software. This showed them that I knew the software inside and out.

Technical jargon can put interviewers to sleep. Instead, talk about the RESULT of your skill. "I mastered X in [software], which let me create hyper-realistic fur" is way more impactful than just listing features. This shows you understand the link between tech and storytelling.

If you don't naturally get to talk about it, you can bring it up by saying something like, 'I have a cool story about this project' or 'You won't believe what happened during this project.' This way, you can talk about the problem you faced and how you fixed it. Or if the conversation goes in a different direction and the interviewer is very interested in seeing your script, plugin, or process, you can show them the script or tool you made.

One must keep honing their skills every opportunity they get. Each assignment and every shot should be taken as an opportunity to propel your skill forward. Nowadays we see that a lot of people are specialists - as in they don't bother themselves with anything other than the area of expertise they are involved in. ex: An animator might not be interested in Rigging or modeling. You often might find yourself in the position of working for someone who cannot afford a specialist and want things done on a budget. In this case if you do have multiple skills and are not limited to a single software - you might have a bigger market niche.
Animation is often a collaborative effort. Share experiences where you've used animation software within a team setting. Discuss how you've collaborated with other artists and departments, integrated feedback into your work, and contributed to a shared vision. Highlighting these experiences can illustrate your ability to use software in a way that enhances team productivity and cohesion.

A good portfolio speaks well about an artist and their skill. However, through experience, I have found that one doesn't know if the candidate is right until they sit with you and do their work. Now that's not always possible during an interview or a selection process. Portfolios showcase the best, animation tests if not done in front of you can be cheated, so I generally go with trick questions during an interview. Talk about a problem to solve, which only an animator would know (an artist knows there are always more than 2 ways to animate something) Ask questions about the software. Ask about animation basics, principles, etc Sometimes work on the portfolio showcases parts of the skill and leadership of the approving director.
