A Fixer
To succeed in executive consulting you first must recognize that your client(s) have already earned a lot of stripes (put in their 10,000 hours). Hence to excel as a freelance consultant one must find a specialty; a subject where you are the expert. That becomes the product. It's difficult to be all things to all people.

I have to disagree with the byline of this situation above. People who seek to climb the corporate ladder more often than not, miss a few steps or take missteps way too often. Rule 1. Do you like what you do? If yes, keep at it. Rule 2. Can you do any better? Then do it. Rule 3. What else can you do, without wanting extra pay, that will make the process better, over time, without stepping on anyone else? Go for it. Rule 4. Learn about the work that is directly connected to your own, just to appreciate the work of those that have to do it. Rule 5. Learn something you have always wanted to learn, outside of your day to day job. If you haven't noticed, all these tasks above are sure to help you stumble and learn and appreciate and grow.

Continuous learning can take various forms: - Formal learning: structured lessons delivered by instructors in a classroom or virtual environment. - Social learning: Employees learn on-the-job skills through observation or social interaction, including peer-to-peer, mentorships or job shadowing. - Self-directed learning: get knowledge independently If you’re interested in exploring continuous learning platforms, here are some popular ones: Coursera, Udemy, LinkedIn Learning, Open EdX, Degreed L. For example, I recently completed a 10-hour course and received a certification in machine learning and artificial intelligence (ML/AI) from Wharton. Stay curious! Continuous learning is crucial for all leaders.

I love the old adage "leaders are readers" I've been doing my job for 30 years and consider myself to be pretty close to expert level in my field - because I'm constantly learning and therefore, evolving. Of course there's always the 'forgetting curve' to consider. So the more we cultivate a flow of consistent learning, the more chance we have of reducing the percentage of losing what we've learnt along that curve.

Rolling stone gather no moss!! We all know this. Hence to make yourself relevant, you need to learn continuously. Without continuous learning, no one can grow. Your knowledge is your biggest tool to win in any situation. So, learn on daily basis. Learn new things to gain more knowledge on what's going on. Learn new techniques and tools, so that you make your strength more powerful and impactful. Add more degrees or certifications on your current knowledge so that you gain more in-depth knowledge on the subject of your expertise. Learning has no alternative. Keep on learning and keep on contributing.

Wise man says - Your Network is your Net-Worth!! I also agree on this. If you want to establish yourself in the world of consulting - you need to do networking. You need to create and establish your own network. Your ability to connect with industry leaders, former colleagues, and potential clients can open doors to opportunities that would otherwise remain closed. Try to attend as much social gathering as you can based on your industry conferences, seminars. Be active in the social networking site and professional networking site. Share your thoughts and your knowledge there, so that people can see, what you are doing and how you are doing as well. Help people to resolve their issues with your own personal knowledge and experiences.

One thing I found helpful is attending and presenting at national conferences. When you get the ability to be on stage in front of your peers at a national conference, you are seen as an industry leader, and it’s much easier to develop a network and relationships across the industry.

These are great points. In joining professional association don’t just join them to see what you can gain but also from a standpoint as to what and how you can also give back. This may involve some time investment but if the contribution is meaningful you would also be able to gain genuine respect and make effective professional networks that can benefit all parties

While a broad understanding of business is beneficial, specializing in a particular niche can make you more marketable as a freelance executive consultant. Identify industries or sectors where your passion and experience align, such as technology, healthcare, or finance. Deep expertise in a specific field can differentiate you from competitors and make you particularly attractive to clients within that niche. This specialization should be reflected in your personal branding, marketing efforts, and the way you communicate your unique value proposition to potential clients.

This is on point. The guys and gals who stick to it are the ones who know what they are talking about. This goes back to learning. It always goes back to learning. How does one specialize if you keep jumping companies or trades or whatever. If you aren't sure of what you want to do yet, please, stay where you are and learn what you can and be the best at that. There are a million things that went into the companies we work for, for them to have become as established as they are. Most of us are blessed to even have the jobs we have, though painful for most, of course, but it takes time and it takes experience and pain and maybe some luck. You need to be there though for any maturity to take place though, right? Out of the fire...a diamond
In addition to technical expertise, soft skills are equally important for successful executive consulting. You must be an exceptional communicator, able to articulate complex ideas clearly and persuasively. Strong interpersonal skills will help you build trust with clients and facilitate effective teamwork. Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities are essential for developing innovative solutions to business challenges. Work on honing these skills through real-world practice, feedback from peers, and self-reflection to ensure you're prepared for the nuanced demands of consulting work.

Practise. My teams and I run drills on each other for presentations and scenarios and we use a timer. Old school. Then we run data sets and try to calibrate. There are a lot of awesome ideas that come from everyone once the juices start flowing. When you see particular strengths showing from the team, build on that. When you see someone shy on one part and the other can help, pair them up. Be the first one that can be critiqued constructively. Make it super fun. If you have fun, then your clients will later on also feel your enthusiasm and your eagerness to participate and to learn. It is a 2 way streak you know, learning from your guys or gals, from clients, peers, etc. Flip sides drilling out a debate and eagerly watch where that goes.

I call this a person's "diplomacy skills". Every consultant must also be a diplomat. Consultants are thrown into sensitive situations where passions run hot. This inevitably leads to challenging interpersonal issues. Taking frequent "temperature checks" and working creatively to ensure no one is embarrassed will drive win-win outcomes.

In today's digital age, embracing technology is non-negotiable for executive consultants. Familiarize yourself with the latest digital tools and platforms that can enhance your consulting services. There are 2 reasons people hire executive consultants: (1) to fix their problems and (2) to have someone to blame when the problem isn't fixed. Successful consultants recognize which relationship they are on with their clients and know that the relationship can change in a moment.
