Before diving into the consulting world, it's essential to evaluate how well your current skills and experiences align with the demands of the profession. Consulting often involves analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication. Reflect on your previous roles and consider how your accomplishments could translate into consulting successes. For example, leadership in project management or a knack for improving processes can be highly relevant. It's also beneficial to understand the types of consulting you're interested in, such as strategy, operations, or IT, to tailor your approach accordingly.

In 2015, I began my transition into consulting and explored various avenues to enter this field. Like many, I initially focused on traditional routes such as educational background, professional networks, and specific skill sets. While these factors undoubtedly lay the groundwork for a career in consulting, I quickly realized that the true differentiators lie elsewhere. Your ability and reputation to take on challenges outside your comfort level and to consistently provide superior client service are critical attributes that will distinguish you as a consultant. It is essential to cultivate a reputation for reliability and excellence, ensuring future clients feel confident in your capacity to deliver results.

You have to be a nosy, passionate, resilient, prickly and opinionated fella to be an effective consultant. I'll pick these qualities any day over others. Look, you can't be perfect. But if you've got these qualities and willing to work hard to smoothen the rough edges, I'd say you have a future in consulting.

Don’t be discouraged before starting your consulting career. This path is significantly more connected to soft skills and ability to learn quickly rather than hard skills or particular type of education. Research companies (niche / MBB / B4) and available positions to see what opportunities are out there.

To bolster your candidacy for a consulting role, actively seek out opportunities to acquire relevant skills. This might involve taking courses in data analysis, financial modeling, or project management. Engaging in professional development demonstrates your commitment to the field and can provide you with the tools needed to succeed in consulting. Additionally, networking with current consultants and attending industry events can offer insights into the profession and help you build relationships that may lead to job opportunities.
-
Research open positions and prepare skills gap analysis (your profile vs job requisition vs workers in the company). For the skills gap analysis divide into hard and soft skills as this is crucial in the consulting world. Make sure to assign your strength and desired level. Create a plan to gain / upgrade your skill to the desired level. Example: many junior management consulting jobs require proficiency in PowerPoint, presentation skills and advanced Excel. There is a plethora of materials available on this online.

Your resume should showcase how your past experiences make you a strong candidate for consulting roles. Highlight transferable skills such as leadership, analytical abilities, and project management. Use specific examples that demonstrate measurable outcomes from your previous work. Tailoring your resume to emphasize problem-solving and strategic thinking can help you stand out to potential employers in the consulting industry.
-
-
Tailor your resume to each particular job requisition. Make sure to perform a skills gap analysis to make sure you are the right fit. Research and make connections with successful candidates / current workers.
Interviews for consulting positions often involve case studies and behavioral questions designed to assess your problem-solving skills and thought process. To prepare, practice case studies and structure your responses using frameworks like SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis or the 3Cs (Company, Competitors, Customers). Familiarize yourself with common industry scenarios and be ready to articulate your thought process clearly and confidently.
-
Research type of interviews in your consulting area. Especially in MBB and B4 there are standard templates on how to approach interviews, case studies and what is expected of you at particular level. For case study interviews research available materials, find a sparing partner, watch YouTube videos, connect with successful candidates eg via LinkedIn or your college. I discourage to interview before doing a very proper research and feeling very confident of what is ahead of you.
Finally, cultivating the right mindset is crucial for a successful career change into consulting. Embrace continuous learning and be prepared to adapt to different industries and challenges. Consulting requires resilience, flexibility, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. Cultivating these qualities will not only help you break into the field but also excel once you're there.

How do you get work? Start by asking where they have pain. This differs with industry, but if you are focused on one industry you probably already know where things aren’t working. Can you help them eliminate the pain by providing expertise, solutions, or a different perspective. Once you know how to help offer to speak at industry meeting or conference and use it to build your reputation and gain clients.

- Cómo encontrarás a tus futuros clientes?
