As the digital era continues to evolve, AI governance is becoming a critical issue that requires comprehensive and inclusive approaches. This panel discussion, presented in collaboration with the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University, will address the nuances of AI governance in Africa and the broader Global South, with the goal of advocating for balanced AI governance approaches that take into account the impact of AI on labor, the environment, sustainability, human rights, economic development, privacy, and governance, and meet the needs of local communities, rather than imposing one-size-fits-all policy solutions derived from Europe.
Institute for Technology Law & Policy
In recent decades, technology has reshaped every aspect of modern life, evolving more rapidly than law and policy. Located just steps from the U.S. Capitol, the Tech Institute’s mission is to close the gaps between law, policy, and technology and to advance justice, inclusion, and accountability at this critical intersection.
The Tech Institute is a hub for policymakers, academics, advocates, and technologists to study and discuss how to center humans and the social good, using technology as a tool. We train the next generation of lawyers and lawmakers with deep expertise in technology law and policy and provide non-partisan insights to policymakers on issues relating to new and emerging technologies. With the leading academic program for law and technology in the United States, we also foster interdisciplinary approaches to solving complex technology law and policy problems. The Tech Institute also identifies and creates opportunities for technology to improve access to justice.
UNESCO, the OECD, President Biden’s Executive Order, and the EU AI Act all emphasize the importance of diverse perspectives when analyzing artificial intelligence’s unique and novel challenges. Global Perspectives on AI Governance will highlight the international perspectives of experts in Georgetown’s Tech LL.M. program, who will bring their experience working in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean to bear and provide insights on the critical issue of how regulatory approaches to AI will differ across countries and regions.
To discuss the development of ChatGPT, its impact, and the future of generative AI, the AI Governance Virtual Symposium Series is pleased to host OpenAI Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon in a webinar panel discussion with expert faculty on Thursday, February 15.
