Problem installing / wiring my Nest Learning thermostat

rmg
Community Member

I am replacing my existing programable thermostat (ComfortNet CTK04) with a new Nest Learning thermostat, and cannot get my heating, cooling, nor fan to run after the replacement. My old thermo has 4 wires connected - white to label 1, yellow to label 2, red to label R, and green to label C. On my new Nest, I have white to W1, yellow to Y1, red to RH, and green to G. The testing of fan, heat or cool generate no air flow whatsoever.  I get error E104 with green connected to G

I am now trying with green connected to label C

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

@rmg , your old thermostat is a Goodman digital communicating thermostat.  The wires attached to 1 and 2 are the data wires.  In order to use the nest thermostat, you will have to rewire your units so as to  use conventional control wiring.  The best thing to do is to hire a Nest Pro that is trained to convert your current Honeywell ComfortNet control, back to a conventional control system.  Is your current HVAC system a Heat Pump?
You need to not test your Nest, it will send 24 VAC onto the data lines and that will damage the control board in the air handler.

We don't have a heat pump. For what it's worth, both our furnace (Amana with 2 stage fan) and Amana a/c units were replaced right at the end of 2016

Is it new wiring to be pulled, or reconfiguration of connections at both the furnace and the thermostat? And what would an approx cost be to have this work done?

@rmg , When the contractor installed that system and thermostat, they had to remove a 9-pin control wire harness in the air handler/Furnace.  And replaced it with a 4-wire connector.  If they left the original harness in the furnace, we might be able to switch back.  With a 2-speed fan, the furnace uses Medium speed on heating, and a high speed when cooling.  Your fan motor is called Electrically Commuted Motor (ECM) and actually has a variable speed control board.  I would like to help you more but I need some information. Can you get me the model number of the Furnace and the model number of the outdoor AC Unit please.
