Barbie: Man City's Mary Fowler and other sports stars get their own dolls

As part of Barbie's 65th anniversary celebrations, a set of new dolls are being released of nine famous athletes from around the world.

This includes Australian footballer Mary Fowler, who plays for Manchester City in the WSL.

Mattel, who make Barbie, say the dolls highlight female sports stars who have broken boundaries in their field.

Reflecting on the role of sport in her life, the Man City striker said: “Sport has been important to me in terms of creating my sense of self. I think it has definitely shaped me into the person I am today."

Five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams will also feature as a sporting Barbie.

The tennis star said: “I’m honoured to be recognised as a sports role model and join forces with Team Barbie to continue empowering the next generation of young girls to never stop believing in their dreams.”

Another athlete to be represented in Barbie's sporting line-up is Spanish paratriathlete and doctor Susana Rodriguez, whose doll will feature her own guide dog.

The new dolls will join a growing set of famous faces to get their own Barbie likeness, such as actor Viola Davis and singer Kylie Minogue.

The Barbie film, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, made over £1billion at the box office last year to become 2023's most successful cinema release.
